THE Brandis Corner Wildlife Group (BCWG) had a successful and busy annual meeting recently, which 64 people attended, at Bradford and Cookbury Village Hall.

The afternoon began with an interesting and entertaining talk, the Wildlish West Show, by member Paul Clarke. This gave a fascinating insight into the many facets of wildlife of the South West, with some stunning pictures.

The group’s photo competition, also organised by Paul, had a very good response, with 73 photos — 56 in seniors and 17 juniors.

Paul said: “Seventy-three photos was an excellent number of entries for our first ever competition. The range of subjects was equally impressive and our photographers, ranging from novices to highly competent amateurs, did themselves proud. Many compliments were paid regarding the quality of their images.”

The junior section was won by Rees Gill, aged 6, with his picture entitled ‘Baby hedgehogs hiding in the coal bunker’. Junior runner up — Edward Hawking, 10, with a photo of a Red Admiral butterfly.

The senior section was won by Dave Lockyer with his photo of a fledgling robin eyeing up a mealworm.

The senior runner-up was Alison Sharp with her photo of a red squirrel on Brownsea Island.

Nine months of work came to fruition with the launch of the group website at the meeting. Designed by David Bowen, of Craythorn Communications, this brings the group more into the modern era as it enters its seventh year and was well received by members present.

The website — www.bcwildlifegroup.co.uk/ — is well worth a look, as not least it showcases just some of the local photographic talent the group has. Some local and national website links are included too and a blog section — for members only — is expected to be a busy feature.

Group leader June Green, a beginner at using the internet, commented on how clear and easy to use it was.

The website was funded by Waitrose Holsworthy’s Community Matters scheme and the group much appreciates this support.

BCWG continues to grow with 134 members currently. If you are interested in joining, an application form can be found on the website or call secretary Barrie Lewis on 01409 220026.
