A CHARITY Christmas concert in Launceston was recently saved after a last minute hero stepped, declaring ‘the show must go on’.
Launceston Choral Society recently took to the stage to perform the first three parts of JS Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, however, when crisis struck and the group’s soloist lost their voice, Louise Innes saved the day, stepping in and travelling down from Crewkerne.
The other solos were beautifully sung by local soprano, Kate Walker, and Jack Oades, tenor, and Joe Ward, bass, who both sing in Exeter Cathedral Choir. The choir welcomed a new face, former St Joseph’s head of music, David Green, who obtained some amazing contrasting colours on the Central Methodist organ.
The three cantatas follow St Luke’s Christmas story which deals with Mary, the shepherds and the angels and were written individually for services on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and the third day of Christmas respectively. Before each cantata, Rob Tremain read the appropriate sections of the gospel.
The performance was expertly put together by conductor Jonathan Mann.
As well as providing a fantastic musical evening for those in attendance, the event also raised money for a worthy cause, collecting more than £300 for the local Royal British Legion poppy appeal.
