AS EVER, Launceston Road Runners have been out and about in recent weeks.

Thursday, June 27 saw the final race of the 2023/24 Cornish Multi Terrain Series, the Gribbin 10k, which is not for the faint hearted. 

It has a challenging terrain that is mixed to include coast path, tarmac, meadow and of course, some steps.

Held with the grateful co-operation of the Menabilly Estate, Menabilly is a historic estate on the south coast of Cornwall just to the west of Fowey and is said to be the inspiration of the iconic novel ‘Rebecca’ written by Daphne Du Maurier. The race takes you across ‘Rebecca’s beach’.

Four Launceston runners finished in the top three in their respective age categories throughout the season, Claire Winfield, Angela Brinicombe, Nicky Hicks and Joe Thomson.

Claire (F55-59) and Angela (F65-69) won their respective categories with Angela the fastest for her age at the Gribbin 10K, while Nicky (F45-49) and Joe (M35-39) were second overall.

For anyone interested in giving the 2024/25 series a go, the first race is the Tywardreath Trotter organised by St Austell Running Club on Saturday, July 27.

On same evening the club held the annual away day run at Boscastle.

Janet Lathom kindly organises this popular event each year, a scenic run in and around the Boscastle area and on the coast path for an hour and then supper at The Napoleon Inn, where one club member was overheard to say ‘the best fish and chips ever’ and she is something of a connoisseur!

The Exeter 10K River Run, organised by the Exeter City Community Trust, is slightly easier on the legs as competitors enjoy the scenic nature of the city and the chance for a personal best.

Launceston’s Ann Barriball took part in the 2024 edition on Friday, June 28, and finished in 53:01.
