CORNWALL CRICKET LEAGUE DIVISION TWO EAST (SUNDAY)
Tintagel v Werrington Seconds
LEADERS Werrington warmed up for their crunch clash at their St Austell counterparts on Saturday by eventually seeing off bottom side Tintagel by four wickets at Butts Field.
Chasing 161, they were rocking as West Indian paceman Akobe Earle (5-40) ran through the top order.
But opener Dan Howgill stood firm to make 74 before Rob Dymond returned to form with an unbeaten 39.
Earlier, Nick Oldaker was the star with the ball, taking 4-41 from his nine overs.
Werrington skipper Jason Seldon won the toss and chose to field after the rain of Saturday, but openers Jordan Blanchard (14) and Akobe Earle started well in adding 46 before Blanchard edged Oldaker behind to Simon Bishop.
Oldaker then dismissed Jordan Burnard for nought (46-2) before Earle (28) and Adrian Pooley (6) all departed to the same bowler to make it 71-4.
Matt Jolliffe and Matt Pethick added 35, but opening bowler Tyler May (2-56) returned to dismiss both, including the key wicket of Jolliffe for 26 (122-6).
Rocco Reynolds was bowled by Seldon for nine, and although Simon Fry (9no) and Vedavyas Kankanala (17) added 31, the part-time spin of Tom Lyle (2-14) took two of the final three wickets to fall.
Tintagel needed early breakthroughs to have any chance, and Earle provided it.
Bowling at good pace, the right-armer from Barbados bowled both Marley May (1) and Ryan Pooley (4) before dismissing key men Tom Lyle (1) and Rob May (4).
But Howgill played a fine knock, and with Dymond doing his job at the other, they whittled away at the target, helped by 37 extras.
Howgill was caught and bowled by Kankanala for 74, and Simon Bishop became Earle’s fifth wicket of the day, but Dymond (39no) and Jason Seldon (4no) got Werrington over the line.
