THE annual Goodacre Cup took place at Roadford Lake over the August bank holiday weekend.

However, the glorious bank holiday weekend weather was not suited to the three-day sailing regatta, which is hosted jointly by South West Lakes Trust and Roadford Lake Sailing Club (RLSC).

The lack of wind meant sailing conditions weren’t brilliant but on the Saturday the wind filled in just as the officer of the deck, Richard Willows, was considering abandonment for the day.

After a difficult wait with the wind swinging around, club officer Alex Hutchings got the fleets away for nearly an hour’s good race. This proved to be the only race possible as Sunday and Monday were equally glassy with little gusts on various parts of the lake, but nothing at all consistent.

On Monday morning, Roadford Lake Centre manager, Matt Lennox, kindly offered free use of the watersports equipment until midday when a decision on racing would be made. This was taken up enthusiastically for an hour of paddle boarding.

At midday, Mr Willows abandoned for the day, allowing an early pack up and departure with for those with long drives. Despite the weather, a lot of work had gone in to the event, with Roadford Lake Activity Centre arranging sponsorship from Gul and Ambrosia, while a number of club members helped with the marks and the committee boat.

Sarah Hallett, one of this year’s key organisers and centre administrator, said:?“The Goodacre Cup is one of the highlights of the sailing calendar at Roadford.

“Thanks to the hard work of RLSC volunteers and the activity centre team, the event offers high quality racing for all. Our aim for next year is to have even more of the fleet to come from junior sections as they are the future after all!”

The volunteer race management team did exceptionally well in ensuring the event was both professional and fun, despite the lack of wind. This was further added to with great catering throughout the weekend, including the evening barbecue.

There are plenty of opportunities to take part in activities at Roadford Lake, including tuition, hire and a number of events and they’re already looking forward to the event returning next year and hope to see even more boats competing.

The next event to take place at Roadford will be the annual Peter Bartlett Cup Junior Regatta this coming Sunday (September 17).

The event aims to introduce new sailors to racing and support and encourage those looking to improve their skills and techniques.

This fun day of sailing, for novice to advanced sailors aged eight to 18, will run from 10am-4pm. Entry costs £15 per person and also includes lunch.

Matt Lennox, centre manager, said: “The annual Peter Bartlett Cup encourages and develops young sailors into racing and is always a great day on the water. This year entrants will be split into two fleets, by experience, and there is a range of prizes available including cash prizes and those donated by the event sponsors.”

This event is in honour of Peter Bartlett who was the first patron of the South West Lakes Trust and held the position of chairman of the Royal Yachting Association for the South West region for 15 years. As past commodore of Brixham Yacht Club, he promoted watersports for disabled people and emphasises that age should not be a barrier in taking up sailing.

There will be a limited amount of boats available for hire so booking in advance is recommended to avoid disappointment.
