WEST HOCKEY LEAGUE WOMEN’S TRELAWNEY DIVISION ONE (SATURDAY)
Bude 2 Plymouth Lions Thirds 0
SECOND half goals from Briony Varcoe and Izzy Sobey gave the Seasiders a second straight win to start the season.
Bude gave a debut to Willow Du Plessis, while Hannah Maloney and Tammy Snowsill were also available.
After a bright start, Bude were soon indebted to the defence of Lottie Davies, Naomi Hatcher and Clare Westaway and some fine saves from Jo Timmins.
The hosts went close when Naomi Harris’ short corner saw Caroline Hockridge’s effort saved.
Captain Phoebe Gannon had her say at the break, and Bude started better, keeping possession for long spells and they eventually went in front.
Good work by EJ Biggadike and player of the match Maloney ended with Sobey running down the right before crossing for Varcoe to do the rest.
Bude stacked the pressure on from the restart, yet Plymouth were able to break and again embraced a series of short corners, which included a fine intervention from Davies in the home defence.
The attacking line worked hard to get high up the pitch to start the next phase of attack. On the break the ball was distributed across to the right wing again for Sobey to drive down the wing and into the D before slipping it past the keeper for 2-0.
Plymouth regained possession, battling hard to get a goal, and Du Plessis received a green card for a stick tackle in the 25, resulting in a short corner for Plymouth and Bude a player down.
Bude’s defence once again kept Plymouth at bay with Clare Westaway saving the ball on the line, before slipping it right to Katie Jackson to hit the ball down the pitch to safety and the umpire’s final whistle.
Bude make the short trip to Bodmin on Saturday.
