Thursday, April 16, saw the Trefloyne Seniors travel to Milford Haven Golf Club. With the weather fine, and the wind relatively calm, it was a fine day to play golf.
Leading the way was captain Jack Zeraschi, partnered by Derek Jones, playing Milford captain Brian Mitchell, partnered by Chris Naylor. The Milford pair were three up after three holes, causing a small degree of worry for Jack and Derek, but a win on the sixth after a couple of halves, settled their nerves. However, a 4 net 3 from Chris extended the lead back to three on the ninth.
If the Milford pair had the best of the front nine, it was Trefloyne's turn on the back nine. After swopping wins on the 11th and 12th, Jack and Derek proceeded to win the 13th, 14th and 16th to level the scores. However, Milford then won the 17th to go one up with one to play. Pars from both Trefloyne players were enough to win the last hole, thereby halving a well fought match.
Next to play were Wayne Connett and John Richardson, playing O. Picton and I. Fairburn. Although Wayne and John took an early lead, winning the third, they soon fell behind, being two down after nine. The back nine was even until the 16th, which the home pair won to win this match 3 and 2.
The third match was between Glyn Latcham and Vernon Jones for Trefloyne and G. Scale and B. Morgan for Milford. Glyn and Vernon struggled to make headway against the home pair, eventually losing 4 and 3.
Fourth to play were Keith Hubbard and Graham Willcocks, against T. Davey and Dick Wooding Jr. This was a close game, with little between the two pairs, the Trefloyne pairing getting home with a 2 and 1 win.
Pat Casement partnered by Keith Warmington (welcome back!) played Richard Brocit and Brian Keen. The Trefloyne pair took the lead in this game, and never relinquished it, going on to win 4 and 3.
Denis Holloway was partnered by Trevor Lewis in the next game, playing against Billy Hier and Roy John. A close game, with Milford holding a one up advantage after nine. Wins on the 11th and 14th extended the advantage to three up with four to play. But, showing grit and determination, the Trefloyne pair won three of the last four holes to halve a fine match.
Next to play were vice-captain Mike Allen partnered by Steve Jones, playing C. Harding and D. Christopher. Mike and Steve struggled against an in form home pairing, losing 4 and 3.
The pairing of Bob Forrest and Dave Crowley took on M. Durward and M. Ballantine in the next match. Bob and Dave played well together, keeping the lead all the way for a 4 and 2 win.
John Perrott and Roger Woodward played Dick Wooding Sr. and J. Clarke. This was a game in which the home pair looked to have won a long way out, being four up. However, John and Roger got it back to all-square with one to play, only to lose the last hole to lose by one.
The final game concerned Bob Burks and Graham Harrison playing an inspired K. Davies. Bob and Graham were three down after three, and nothing they could do could get them back into this game, against this opponent. They eventually lost 6 and 5.
Final score: Milford Haven 6 Trefloyne 4.
