WALTER C PARSON PENINSULA LEAGUE PREMIER WEST (SATURDAY)
Camelford 1 Holsworthy 2
TWO goals late in the first half earned the Magpies an opening day victory at a much-changed Camelford on Saturday.
The Camels have lost nine players from last year’s squad, but gave debuts to Josh Smith at left-back, Seth Brown in midfield and Martin Jago on the right of the front three.
Holsworthy gave a start to frontman Blake Shapland while midfielder Jonny Lang was on the bench.
Holsworthy were the better side in the first half with Jack Tribble, Aidan Slade, Blake Shapland all having efforts at Howie Evans’ goal.
But as is often the case, they were punished on 23 minutes as good play by Smith down the left found Jago on the right, and his cross to the back post was headed home by Leighton Carhart.
But the visitors led by the break.
First, Shapland got the better of Sam Wade before crossing for Jay Thomas to slot in from six yards, and within two minutes it was 2-1 as Ollie Moores’ effort from 40 yards hit the bar, only to fall to Jacob Nosworthy for a tap-in.
Camelford improved after introducing Andy Boxall who was late due to work and Sam Haddy at the break, but they rarely threatened, while Holsworthy had further chances through Slade, Shapland and sub Josh Reynolds.
