A footballing stalwart who has dedicated more than 40 years to the local game is being recognised with a testimonial match to help raise money for the Alzheimer's Society.

The event will celebrate more than four decades of work in grassroots football by Dave Rider. Close to 100 current and former Callington Town and Callington Colts players, many of whom now live outside the county, are heading back to Cornwall to take part in the event on Sunday, May 3.

Dave, 72, who lives in Callington, is one of the founding members of the current youth set-up, Callington Colts. He has coached and nurtured well over 100 youngsters (both male and female) and helped them to move from youth football into adult football.

Dave was diagnosed with dementia five years ago, but despite this he still plays an active role in the football club and is a linesman for the club's reserve team.

Matthew Reid, part of the organising committee of ex-players running the event, said: 'The man is a local footballing legend and he has literally dedicated his life to football in the community. When we came up with the idea and posted it on Facebook, we were overwhelmed by the messages back from former players. So many of them said that they wanted to be part of it for Dave. People could not sing his praises highly enough. We've got ex-players coming down from as far away as Newcastle to be involved.'

Andrew Long, vice-chairman of Callington Town Football Club as well as Callington portreeve, said: 'The effort that some of Dave's former players have put in to get this day planned is testament to him as a person and for all his years of dedication to local football. It should be a terrific day that will help raise vital funds for an extremely worthwhile cause.'

The testimonial will take place at Callington Town's main football pitch and clubhouse within the Community College grounds.

A Callington Colts match will kick off the day at 11am and will be followed at 1pm by the testimonial match. There will be children's activities, as well as a Gladiator challenge and Sumo Wrestling suits for older children. A barbecue and hog-roast will be available. Tickets are £5 and proceeds will go to the Alzheimer's Society and the local memory café.
