Glorious sunshine blessed one of the highlights in the ladies bowls calendar on Friday when president of the West Wales Ladies Bowling Association, Ceris Hewlings, held her president's day.

Invited bowlers from Ceris's home club, joined with those from around the county, plus friends from further afield, to celebrate a successful season.

Following a glass of Bucks Fizz and Welsh cakes on arrival, Ceris presented Saundersfoot club president Ann Lewis with two pretty shrubs to be planted at the club in memory of former county president Gloria Dugmore who passed away at the beginning of the season.

A jack was then placed in the centre of the green with everyone being invited to donate a pound for charity and have a go at getting their wood closest to it. Winner was Viv Kerrison, of Whitland BC, who received a bottle kindly donated by Welsh president, Ann Thomas, of Haverfordwest BC. The proceeds were donated to Graham Hughes, a member of Saundersfoot BC, who is running the Cardiff 10k later this year, as his way of saying thank you to the staff of the liver unit at the Heath Hospital, Cardiff, for giving him a second chance at life when he was seriously ill last year.

A friendly 21-end match then took place before the ladies retired to the clubhouse to enjoy a delicious three-course meal served by club vice-chairlady Diane Rigden, ably assisted by Angela Roberts and Anne Davies.

Chatter and laughter echoed around the packed clubhouse before a special appearance from Arnold and Sedgewick (alias Dennis Reed and Graham Hughes) almost brought the house down!

Presentations followed, including one for the rink who won the most ends during the match - 16 out of the 21 played to be exact - which went to Saundersfoot's Joyce Howe, Elaine Shaw and Beryl Lewis who were skipped by Gwen McFarlane, of Fishguard.

The festivities rounded off with the grand raffle, with prizes kindly donated by members and local businesses, including Andrew Price Hair, T. P. Hughes and Son, South Hook LNG, Trefloyne Manor, Pembroke Castle, Shoebox, Saundersfoot, Tenby Observer, Celtic Haven, Oakwood, Heatherton World of Activities, Caldey Island, Vincent Davies Department Store, No 25 Café, Giltar Hotel, Port of Milford Haven, Manor House Wildlife Park, Pembrokeshire Agricultural Society and Sainsbury's, Tenby.

All in all, a great day was had by all, with all focus now on Wednesday, July 22, when the WWLBA welcome Glamorgan to Saundersfoot for their last Savegar Trophy group game - the winner of which will earn themselves a place in the all-important final against Ceredigion in August.
