ECB CORNWALL PREMIER LEAGUE (SATURDAY)

St Austell v Werrington

WERRINGTON let slip a promising position to fall to a second straight defeat, this time at joint leaders St Austell.

It was all going well for the visitors when St Austell slipped to 102-6 after winning the toss, but some defiant batting got them up to 198 before the final wicket fell.

Werrington were going okay themselves at 159-5, but the departures of John Moon (61) and Ryan Pooley (19) turned the tide, and the lower order couldn’t quite get the job done.

Werrington welcomed back all-rounder Ben Smeeth and recalled seamer Jordan Duke with both George Rickard and Mark Taskis unavailable, but it was St Austell’s opening pair of Mike Bone and Dan Jarman that started well with Bone in particular looking in decent touch.

They added 25 before Jarman was bowled by Dan Barnard, but Bone kept going until he was caught by Thulina Dilshan off Barnard for 34 (61-2).

County keeper Alex Bone made four before being caught and bowled by Barnard who bowled his ten overs unchanged for figures of 3-33.

Wickets continued to tumble including two for Duke (2-32), but the Saints then rallied with Adam Snowdon making 33 from 29 balls.

A last wicket stand of 30 between Steve Raven (20) and Liam Watson got them to 198.

Werrington sent out their T20 openers in Dilshan and Sam Hockin, but this time it didn’t work as both fell to Snowdon.

Adam Hodgson and Mark Gribble dug in before Hodgson’s departure for 30 at 100-5.

Moon and Pooley then batted Werrington back into the game before Pooley was stumped off Connor Cooke.

Moon went for 61 to Gary Bone, and although Nick Lawson and Ben Jenkin made 11 apiece, Snowdon (4-26) and Cooke (2-32) kept their nerve as Jenkin was stumped off the final ball going for a six for a tie.
