HOLSWORTHY’S tough run of results continued last week as they were knocked out of the Devon St Luke’s Cup before being held by Millbrook on Saturday in SWPL Premier West.
The Magpies welcomed old rivals Sidmouth Town to Upcott Field on Tuesday night and after a promising opening, found themselves 4-0 down at the break.
Home striker Sam Jago couldn’t apply the finishing touch when sent through by Lewis Haxell and could only shoot straight at Elliot Driver, and on 23 minutes the Vikings went ahead as a rare mistake from Jedd Peschke – caught in possession – ended up with centre-back partner Ollie Moores diverting a right-wing cross into his own net.
Gavin Carter shot wide when he should have scored from 16 yards, and Town doubled their lead on 25 minutes when a mistake at the back following a goal-kick ended with Louis Jagger-Cane beating Ryan Chadwick.
Two goals before the break then ended the contest. Chadwick saved Craig Veal’s penalty after a clumsy tackle from Jacob Nosworthy, but Veal slotted in the rebound.
Veal did get on the scoresheet moments later with a superb 16-yard volley from a corner.
The hosts introduced Sam Hill, Josh Reynolds and Aidan Slade for Max McDonald, Jacob Nosworthy and Lewis Haxell, but despite keeping things quiet at the other end, the closest they came to scoring was ten minutes from time when sub Blake Shapland and Aidan Slade were denied.
Saturday saw the Magpies aim to bounce back against Millbrook.
The home side took the lead through Finn Reeve’s corner which was slotted in by Gavin Carter, but the Brook made the long trip home with a point when a deep cross to the far post was headed in by Luis Hewings on the half hour.
Holsworthy welcome Launceston tonight (7.30pm) before a tough test at Newquay on Saturday (3pm).
