Cornwall Cricket League Division Five and Six East latest round-up

BOTH Holsworthy Seconds and their Bude counterparts suffered disappointing defeats over the weekend in the race for promotion.

Holsworthy visited Bugle who were stronger than in recent weeks, and the Devonians were held to 153-6, a total helped by 36 extras and twenties from Ryan Seymour-Smith (25), Lyndon Piper (22) and Dan Marks (22).

The visitors were home inside 30 overs, losing just four wickets in the process.

Lee Houghton struck 103 from just 81 balls but Bude were beaten by seven wickets at Roche Thirds on Sunday.

The right-hander smashed 13 fours and four sixes as the Seasiders posted 221-3, with opener Michael Taylor (41) and Mike Ellis (49no) providing excellent support.

However, despite Peter Ellis’ 3-49, the hosts eased to victory with an unbroken stand of 175 between Chris Dowle (88no) and Ian Trudgeon (80no).

Tyler Jasper made his first half century in men’s cricket as Werrington Fourths won by six wickets at their St Austell counterparts.

Both teams were missing players, but Jasper (60) and stand-in skipper Matt Chatfield (81no) were the heroes as they chased down St Austell’s total of 200-4 with 16 balls to spare.

Earlier in the day, Emma Horrell became the first lady to play for the men’s team and she repaid the faith with 1-29 from her ten overs, while Cornwall Under 12s player Sam Uglow dismissed former Premier League player Matt Ellison for 20, via a catch from his dad, Dave.

South Petherwin Seconds were beaten by 29 runs at Wadebridge Thirds.

James Cawsey was the pick of the Petherwin attack with 5-37 as Wadebridge were all out for 209, while Ollie Peterson (2-36) and Emma Barnes (2-46) provided the support.

Petherwin were going well at 80-1 with Richard Watson and Ollie Peterson in the runs, but once Peterson departed they never fully recovered.

Watson was seventh out at 174, moments after Caleb Forsyth (20) also went.

Elsewhere in the division, leaders Gorran are 27 points clear of second-placed Gunnislake after both teams won.

Gorran enjoyed a 30-run success at St Stephen Seconds having posted 199-8, while Gunni were four-wicket winners at Saltash St Stephens Seconds having been set 203 to win.

Saltash were back in action on Sunday at Bugle, but lost by three wickets having made just 94 with the bat.

In Division Six East, second-placed Luckett were given 20 points without having to take to the field as Launceston Thirds conceded.

But they made no ground on leaders St Neot Seconds who raced to an eight-wicket success over their Tideford counterparts at Wenmouth.

Stephen Rowe kept up his superb wicket-taking form with 3-27, while Arthur Fox (2-22) and Ted Dyer (2-28) also chipped in.

Only the Mitchells – Thomas and Jamie – made much impression with 26 each before Dyer smashed an unbeaten 54 as the target of 106 was reached within 17 overs.

Tintagel Seconds continued their good form with a comfortable seven-wicket success over their Boconnoc counterparts at Butts Field.

Darren Piper backed up his 60 the previous week with 79 as Boconnoc made a competitive 191-9, a total helped by 49 extras.

Tintagel’s bowling was led by Vedavyas Kankanala’s 3-31 while Rocco Reynolds (3-59) and Tom Harris (2-34) were also amongst the wickets.

The reply saw openers Richard Pethick (24) and Simon Harrison (52) add 86, and although they fell to 121-3, Ben Jarram (36no) and Joe Parsons (42no) kept their cool to secure the victory in the 33rd over.

There were also wins in the division for Newquay Fourths at Lanhydrock Thirds and Menheniot-Looe Thirds at their St Stephen counterparts.
