Four local drivers from the Saundersfoot area are participating in a 1,500-mile driving challenge called 'Benidorm or Bust' from Saundersfoot to Benidorm.

The event consists of navigating from a starting point to a known destination whereby they will carry out 'Top Gear' style challenges along the route.

Calvert Jones, James Sutton, Karl Griffiths and Mathew Williams set off in their golfing liveried Fiat Ulysse motor car from the village on Wednesday morning to begin the drive to Dover where 200 other competitors were due to meet prior to sailing over to Calais later that evening.

Each team had the option to dress their cars up and wear fancy dress themselves in a bid to win the 'Spirit of the event' award. All four decided to dress up as golfers and compete under the team name of 'Faldo's Flyers'.

"The idea started after watching the movie Gum Ball Rally which involved millionaires indulging in a cross-Europe style driving challenge in Ferraris, Porches and similar vehicles," Calvert said. "We knew we couldn't afford such an event, so decided on the Benidorm or Bust option where you had to buy a budget car in the region of £500... a few meetings later at the Shoreline restaurant, and we came up with the team theme of golfers and the team was formed and the relevant paperwork completed to enter the event."

Once they knew their entry was accepted, it was decided that all four of them were to fundraise for local charities as part of their journey to Benidorm.

The event started in earnest on Thursday morning from Calais on a 390-mile drive via Le Mans to arrive at Poitiers for an overnight stay.

Today (Friday) begins at Poitier on a 460-mile drive over the Pyrenees Mountains, into Spain and ending that evening in Zaragoza.

The final leg starts on Saturday from Zaragoza over a 285-mile drive down to Benidorm, where the event finishes with a prize award evening.
