HOLSWORTHY boss Ryan Hall felt his side ‘in large spells were very, very good’ despite going down to a disappointing 1-0 defeat to in-form Callington Town on Wednesday night.

The SWPL Premier West clash was decided by Kieran Ryall’s opportunistic finish on 68 minutes after a long-range strike hit two home defenders before dropping inside the box for the former St Dominick attacker to slide a finish past Ryan Chadwick.

It was a case of missed chances for the Magpies who missed a plethora either side of the break, and when they did get their efforts on target, were denied by visiting keeper Jake Mead-Crebbin.

However, Hall, who has seen his side pick up nine points from a possible 15, was delighted with his side’s performance.

He said: “The game was a really good game, played by two really good sides, and I was impressed with the speed of Callington’s attack in transition.

“We played our part and I thought in large spells we were very, very good. We got sucker punched, but it’s a night where we will rue missed chances.

“I think on the night it’s some of the best attacking football we have played under my tenure and on another day, could well have won the game by four or five goals.

“But fair play to Callington, they played the perfect away performance, rode their luck and took the chance when it came.”

Holsworthy were in the bottom six for goals scored in last year’s division, but the Magpies have twice scored two in victories over Camelford and Liskeard Athletic, before a 3-1 victory over Sticker, while their defeats to Dobwalls and Callington have been 1-0.

Hall believes they will make a side pay in the not too distant future.

He said: “It’s really encouraging to be honest, we're playing really well and we were desperately unlucky on Wednesday.

“It’s only a matter of time before it all comes together and we will then cause teams lots of problems.”

While Hall wants his forward to line to rinse and repeat in training, he believes once one goes in, there’ll be no stopping them in front of goal as they look to build on last season’s mid-table finish, adding: “We're going to work on a few things in training, but I think ultimately it’s a confidence thing.

“Once our forwards get firing, confidence will be flowing and the goals will come. The biggest thing is we are creating the chances, it only becomes a matter of time then until things click.”

Hall was also keen to praise three of his starting line-up.

He said: “There were lots of very good performances, I thought first half Gavin Carter was unplayable, so much so, Callington made changes defensively in the second half to try and counter it. Callum Martyn at right-back was phenomenal again and Aidan Slade in midfield ran the show.”

The size of Holsworthy’s ground means they are ineligible for the FA Vase, which means they are next in action on Wednesday, September 4 when they entertain Bodmin Town who have started the season encouragingly under Simon Minett.

Hall said: “Our next game sees us play Bodmin after a little break, which will be a big test.

“I know their manager Simon very well, his teams play good football and are very organised, so we will have to be at it to get anything out of the game.

“But the little break means it’s a good time to work on things, rest some niggles and hopefully allow us to be on top form going into the game.”
