Scarlets scrum-half Aled Davies was the special guest at the Whitland Junior Borderers' summer fun day at Parc Dr. Owen on Sunday morning and he was also joined by Welsh Rugby Union dragon mascot Scorch on a flying visit.
Davies, a former Whitland youth player, is just one of a long line of stars who have come through the ranks of the West Wales outfit - including current RWC international training squad members Mike Phillips and Scott Williams - and he was keen to support his former club's future stars.
Neither Davies nor Scorch were content to watch from the sidelines as the Borderers Under 7s, 8s, 9s-and-above teams put on a training session for any new recruits to get a taste for rugby ahead of next season's matches.
The club want any new players to show up at their registration day on September 6 and put on an array of games - from the crossbar challenge to tug of war and an assault course - all designed to whet the appetite.
With prizes to be won, Davies stepped up to test his skills on the drop-kick target practice game - where he had to punt his ball into a large bin.
"I don't fancy my chances," he said before making his attempt. "There's plenty of skill on display here at Whitland. There's some pressure on me to show them how it's done and this is a tough challenge."
Davies missed the outsized bin by a narrow margin, only to be shown up by junior club vice-chairman, Jason Bowen, who landed his shot and claimed the prize, after a lucky bounce, moments later.
Scorch's attempt was pitiful, but the giant WRU mascot was not to be disheartened and he carried on to join Davies in taking part in the crossbar challenge and the adults versus players tug of war - which was won by the young players hands down.
"Scorch and Aled told us they really enjoyed their trip to Whitland," said Jason Bowen. "They were impressed by the set-up down here and we hope that there are more players out there now who will take their advice and come down for our registration day on September 6 or get in touch ahead of the new season.
"We are a thriving club who have punched well above our weight over the years, but we are always looking for new talent and for youngsters to nurture through the age groups.
"They don't all start out playing like Aled or reaching his level, but one thing is for sure, if they come to the Whitland Borderers club they will enjoy their rugby."
Other special guests at the festival were senior club players Alan Proctor, Dafydd Evans and Nico Setaro, with over a hundred children enjoying the day.
