Saturday, December 15

FOR the second consecutive week, the weather wrecked the local football scene with just a handful of matches surviving the torrential downpours on Friday night and Saturday morning.

In the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League Premier Division, Launceston’s home game with Godolphin Atlantic and Callington Town’s trip to neighbours Saltash United both fell foul to the weather.

Managerless Bude Town welcomed Wadebridge Town in Division One (West) but fell to a 3-2 defeat at Broadclose Park. The Bridgers led 1-0 at the break thanks to Dan Jennings’ effort before Kyle Flew’s double gave them a comfortable advantage.

However the Seasiders showed plenty of spirit to score twice in the dying minutes through Tommy Statton and the returning Billy Hopcroft, but it wasn’t to be.

They’re back in action on Saturday when they welcome Bere Alston United before the Boxing Day derby at Holsworthy (2pm).

They round off their 2018 with a trip to Dobwalls on Saturday, December 29.

While Bude were falling to yet another defeat, Holsworthy were left frustrated as their Devon Premier Cup clash at Elmore was postponed for the third successive Saturday.

They are likely to try once more this weekend ahead of the visit of Bude.

The Magpies’ second team’s big Devon Intermediate Cup last 16 clash with Spreyton was also postponed.

The rest of the local football scene was also decimated.

No Post area teams played in the Mortgage Advice Bureau East Cornwall League or Macron Devon and Exeter League while just two beat the weather in the JJ Jones and Sons Duchy League as high-flying St Breward lost 4-3 at home to St Merryn in Division One despite a brace from Karl Croft and Dan Couch’s strike.

In Division Three, St Minver Reserves were held to a disappointing 4-4 draw by visiting St Columb Major, who picked up their first point of the season.

However the game was full of ebbs and flows with the home side fighting back three times including Ross Beare converting an injury-time penalty for a hat-trick of spot-kicks. Joe Robinson was the other St Minver scorer.

The North Devon League was slightly better off with five games played involving Post area clubs.

Kilkhampton beat North Molton Sports Club seconds 1-0 courtesy of Adam Sleeman to move up to third in Intermediate One while in the league below Bridgerule Reserves thrashed Barnstaple Reserves 8-2 away from home with Darren Williams notching five as well with Nick Purcell and Peter Lovett and an own goal completing the tally. Morwenstow Reserves’ long trip to South Molton ended in a 6-2 defeat with Ben Pengilly and Ryan Heywood on the scoresheet.

It was a bad day in Intermediate Three as Shebbear United Reserves and Ashwater were both hit for six away from home at Lynton and Braunton Fourths respectively. Shebbear did at least grab a consolation through Brendan Harris.
