SWPL Premier West preview – Saturday, April 12
NEWQUAY can move to within touching distance of promotion if they pick up a positive result at Penzance tomorrow (3pm).
The Peppermints have their sights firmly set on the Western League Premier Division and know that bar a near impossible goal-swing, four points from their final two games will see them promoted ahead of Liskeard Athletic due to their far better goal difference (+59 to +40).
The Blues have just one game remaining – a Good Friday date at Millbrook, but Newquay, who are one point behind, could be champions before then.
But lose and it could be all over.
Shaun Middleton’s side go to Penlee Park tomorrow before they get the now famous SWPL Ground Hop underway on Maundy Thursday evening when they welcome Wendron United (7.30pm).
Having been getting 400-plus crowds in recent weeks, an attendance approaching four figures could be on hand to see Harry Downing lift the title.
But there is still plenty of work to be done before then.
Penzance are a tough nut to crack, particularly on home turf, while Wendron, like Penzance are aiming for the top four.
Elsewhere in the division, due to tonight’s matches – Holsworthy against Bude Town and Callington Town versus Dobwalls – there are just four other matches tomorrow.
Bottom side Launceston earned a point at home to Bude Town on Tuesday night, but the Clarets now must their final two to have any chance of not finishing last.
They sit five points behind St Day who welcome fellow strugglers Millbrook, before their trip to Bodmin Town.
It means the bottom four are all playing each other, while 12th-placed Bude Town are only three ahead of St Day.
With the top six sewn up in an order yet to be decided, Wadebridge Town, Truro City Reserves, Holsworthy and Camelford to an extent are in the race for seventh.
Wadebridge, who visit Truro are the favourites, but if they lose and Holsworthy beat Bude then the Magpies will go level.
Truro also have four fixtures to play as opposed to Wadebridge and Holsworthy’s three.
Camelford have enjoyed a stellar run of form recently to move up to tenth, and their improvement was shown by a 1-1 draw at leaders Liskeard Athletic on Tuesday night, a result which could cost the Blues the title.
Camelford welcome a Wendron side who could go fourth at the expense of Penzance with a win.
Fixtures: Friday (7.30pm): Callington Town v Dobwalls; Holsworthy v Bude Town.
Saturday (3pm): Bodmin Town v Launceston, Camelford v Wendron United, Penzance v Newquay, St Day v Millbrook, Truro City Reserves v Wadebridge Town.
