Mousehole 2
CAMELFORD pushed high-flying Mousehole all the way before eventually falling to a 2-1 defeat at Trefrew Park.
The mid-table Camels, who gave a debut to North Petherwin striker Joe Reeve, started brightly with Ed Harrison and Andy Boxall having shots saved by Cory Harvey.
However the West Cornwall club took the lead shortly after. Home goalkeeper Luke Gwillam denied striker Kieran Toland in a one-on-one situation, winger Rheiss McClean picked up the rebound and drove home from 20 yards.
Despite the Seagulls enjoying the majority of possession, Camelford drew level shortly after thanks to a moment of brilliance from winger Kian Burns. Picking the ball up on halfway, he beat four players before being upended in the box as he went to shoot. Harrison then beat Harvey from the spot.
Mousehole are playing at Step Six for the first time in their history and went into the break in front. Amara Bakayoko saw his initial shot saved by Gwillam before his follow up was cleared off the line by Tom McLachlan. However the linesman adjudged the ball to have crossed the line.
The second-half was split into two with the visitors enjoying most of the ball before Camelford, who brought on midfielder Mike Steele having made the move back to the club from Launceston, sparked into life for the final 20 minutes. But despite being well on top, couldn’t muster that clearcut chance their play deserved.
Manager Reg Hambly was relatively pleased despite the setback.
He said: “We haven’t played a lot recently due to the weather so it was great to get back out there. We had a lot of possession in the second-half against a really good side, so we can’t be too disheartened.
“Joe Reeve played up front for us and did really well holding the ball up while Matt Andrew is getting back to full fitness now.
“Josh Insley should also be back soon from injury so we’ll have plenty of options in midfield.”
Camelford head to mid-table Dobwalls on Saturday (2.15pm) before the traditional Boxing Day clash at Wadebridge Town (11am).
