CAMELFORD got back to winning ways after last week’s 6-0 drubbing at St Austell by dishing out a 5-1 beating to Callington at Trefrew Park in the South West Peninsula League Premier Division.
Last weekend saw their five Cornwall under 18s stars — Ed Harrison, Josh Penrose, James Heywood, Charlie Hambly and Joe Adkins — all turning out for the Duchy in their County Championship victory over Sussex at St Blazey, so manager Reg Hambly would have been delighted to have a near full-strength squad to choose from.
The first 20-minutes of the game consisted of no opportunities as both teams were content to keep possession when they could, but the game was effectively over by the break.
When Camelford play their passing football they are hard to stop and an excellent team move saw them earn a penalty.
Striker Mark Gusterson played a throughball to the overlapping Tom Cowling, who played a quick one-two with Bobby Hopkinson, however Tom was brought down in the area, giving the referee an easy decision.
Up stepped Josh Insley to put the Camels in front.
It was soon 2-0 after the restart as Ed Harrison played the ball through to Gusterson who cleverly slotted home at Sam Borthwick’s near post.
Callington now had a period of possession but failed to score, and the Camels nearly capitalised as Gusterson’s ball up to Hopkinson was well chested down but the volley was well saved by Borthwick.
Callington grabbed a lifeline and it came through Tornado Bello.
Winger Andre Rodulkov’s ball was deflected into the box where Bello was lurking to hammer past stand-in goalkeeper Dan Balsdon.
Two minutes later and Camelford restored their two-goal lead with some brilliant football. The move started off from the Camelford half when right-back Adam Jenkin cut in and played the ball to Hopkinson who passed it out to winger Josh Penrose to slide the ball through to Harrison, who calmly skilled past the defender to slot home past the helpless Borthwick.
Just before half-time, the visitors cause was made even harder when Rodulkov was sent off.
The second-half got under way and the Camels first chance was a penalty, which Hopkinson took and missed. Five minutes later and they hit the post when Gusterson’s ball to Harrison came out of the post and was cleared.
It was soon 4-1 and again it came through Harrison and Hopkinson.
Harrison gave the ball to Hopkinson who picked out Gusterson to round Borthwick and then calmly dink the ball in with his weaker foot.
The last goal was scored late on as Josh Penrose played the ball through for the onrushing right-back Adam Jenkin who finished it in style with a celebration to match as the Camels picked up another home win, and with it, moved above their visitors into 15th, and having played two games less.
The Camels return to action on Saturday with the long trip to Cullompton Rangers who will look to bounce back from their 6-1 hammering at Plymouth Parkway last weekend.
