TORRIDGE CUP QUARTER-FINAL (TUESDAY)
Bude Town 1 Appledore 0
GEORGE Harvey’s opportunistic first half goal sent the Seasiders into the last four as they saw off their North Devon visitors at a cold Broadclose Park.
The striker slotted home from 20 yards after a mix-up in the visiting backline, and despite rarely threatening themselves to extend that lead, they saw the game out relatively comfortably.
In blustery conditions, chances were at a premium before Bude’s man of the match Steve Box forced a good save down to Matthew Fay’s left on 25 minutes.
The ever-dangerous Rocco Dyer’s cross/shot flashed wide, but the Seasiders were in front on the half hour.
Ruan Tape’s throughball saw two defenders leave it for each other, allowing Harvey to nip in and make no mistake.
The hosts were thanking their lucky stars early in the second half as a cross wasn't dealt with and a strike smacked the crossbar.
Dyer was always a dangerous outlet for the Seasiders, and he went close to the Cornishmen’s second as he broke through the heart of the opposition defence. But the keeper saved as he looked to prod the ball home.
Appledore, who play in the Devon Football League, one step below Bude, piled bodies forward late on as they searched for an equaliser, but to no avail.
Reflecting on the game, Bude boss Steve Hackett said: “This wasn't a pretty game of football, but the lads dug deep, never stopped working and were gritty. Thanks to the supporters that braved the cold, we appreciate you being there!”
