SWPL PREMIER WEST (SATURDAY)

Bude Town 0 Callington Town 1

BUDE slipped to a home defeat as a clinical Callington Town left Broadclose Park with a 1-0 victory.

The Seasiders, who welcomed back Callum Deemer to the attacking line, hadn’t played a fortnight and were dealt a blow in the warm-up as goalkeeper Ty Rowe pulled out injured, meaning teenage midfielder Jake Woodland went in goal.

That didn’t stop Bude in the early stages as Maximus Alvarez-Lopera had three efforts from distance – two saved and one which narrowly went past the top right-hand corner.

But the game was decided 18 minutes in as the hosts switched off from a throw-in which allowed Kieran Prescott to fire past Woodland.

The rest of the game saw, despite plenty of endeavour from both sides, a lack of chances as Callington kept up their fine campaign.

Reflecting on the afternoon, Bude boss Steve Hackett said: “It was a very even contest decided by a moment where we switched off and found ourselves a goal down after a really bright start.

“Callington executed their game plan brilliantly, they got their goal and then soaked up our pressure. I’m pleased that we stood toe-to-toe with one of the teams at the top end of the table, but disappointed with their goal.

“Looking ahead to Millbrook on Saturday we are expecting another difficult game against a side who are in a good patch of form.

“We really need to pick up some more points now the games are running out. It’s important that the lads dust themselves down and believe in themselves a bit more.”
