SWPL PREMIER WEST (SATURDAY)
Newquay 2 Holsworthy 1
HOLSWORTHY rounded off another busy week of games with a narrow 2-1 reversal at Newquay on Saturday.
The Magpies had taken on title-chasers St Austell and Liskeard earlier in the week, the second of which saw Sam Jago’s goal beat the Blues and hand St Austell the title in a 1-0 victory.
Top three hopefuls Newquay were the challenge at Mount Wise and boss Ryan Hall had plenty of players unavailable, meaning he had to name himself alongside teenager Kai Baxter on the bench.
There were a number of players playing out of position as they lined up in an unfamiliar 4-4-2 shape.
And within four minutes they were behind as after Aiden Slade committed a foul 20 yards out, free-kick specialist Cam Turner whipped a shot around the wall which gave Ryan Chadwick no chance.
Holsworthy soon responded with their man of the match Toby Martyn forcing Brodie Cole into a decent save, and they were level 20 minutes in as good play by Martyn found Will Harris whose mis-hit cross ended up in the far corner.
The game was scrappy with chances at a premium although Jago had a shot eiher side of the break go just wide.
But with 18 minutes to go it was the hosts that won it as Turner’s inswinging free-kick from the right evaded everybody and nestled into the net.
With ten minutes to go Hall had to bring himself on following an injury to Martyn, but despite having a shot blocked, the Peppermints held on.
