Cornwall Cricket League East Division round-up – Saturday, April 27
AFTER the opening two weeks were all but a washout in the east of the county, a handful of games were played on Saturday despite overnight rain.
Callington Seconds hosted St Minver in Division Two East.
The home side chose to bat but soon lost new skipper Richard Brown for nought, caught behind off overseas player Reece Thompson.
Alex Robinson made 19 before being trapped lbw, but when Nick Parker and Kian Burns were going well, a big score looked on the cards.
But their dismissals, for 52 and 35 respectively to Rob Hawken (2-31 off five) turned the tide as the hosts were all out for 169. Father and son Peter and Blake Tancock made 17 apiece in the middle order.
Dean Jeffery took 3-22 with his off-spin, while Thompson was the key with 4-35.
The chase was a similar affair with Ben Hawken (32) and Ryan Pooley (48) amongst the runs.
Cally fought back with club legend Jim Shorten taking 2-25 from his nine overs, but 16 apiece from Kelvin Lockwood and Kieran Gill as well as 25 from Thompson got the job done.
Games at Launceston, Liskeard and Roche were cancelled in Division Three East, but title favourites Luckett started with a victory over promoted Werrington Thirds at Chapel Field.
After being sent in, openers Ryan Brown and Henry Wilkinson faced probing new ball spells from Ian Wornsip and Ian Searle, the latter conceding just 14 runs from his nine-over allocation.
However they got through it with Brown making 50 after rejoining the club from Callington, while Wilkinson, who has made the same move, made 22 before being bowled by Dan Jenkin.
Jenkin dismissed the dangerous Andrew Hoskin for 13, and it needed a sprightly 41 not out from Angus Harley which included four fours and two sixes, to get them up to 197-6.
Jenkin (2-36) and left-arm spinner Sam Smeeth (2-45) shared four wickets while Joe Gent chipped in with 2-19 from four overs.
Werrington were missing a few and soon lost openers Ian Searle and Ed Walters for ducks to man of the match Harley (2-18 off nine) and Ryan Brown.
Paul Miller (20) and Simon Bishop (16) steadied the ship, but once they departed the wickets tumbled with Mark Southcott (2-32) and Jonny Hoskin (3-21 off nine) sharing five.
Worsnip came in at seven and contributed 47 and received useful support from tailenders Gareth Cox (15) and Tyler May (12), but the end came at 140.
The other game saw St Austell Thirds win a low-scoring thriller at home to Grampound Road Seconds by two wickets after the visitors were dismissed for just 96.
Only one match went ahead in Division Four East as St Blazey Seconds won by nine wickets at St Stephen in a chase of 116, while two went ahead in Division Five East.
Promoted Gorran got off to a good start as their long trip to Bude Seconds resulted in a comfortable victory.
Dan Pascoe was the star with 96 as they recovered from a poor start to be dismissed for 190.
The returning Derek Piper (5-32) and the evergreen Mike Taylor (3-26) shared eight wickets.
Bude soon found themselves in trouble at 25-5, but 29 from Lee Houghton and an unbeaten 53 from Piper got them to 129-7.
Holsworthy Seconds were beaten by relegated Wadebridge Thirds.
The visitors recovered from 96-8 to post 138 despite Guy Beagley’s 5-22 on debut.
Steve Gunner was then the difference maker with the ball as, after making 47 with the bat, he then claimed 4-19. Aiden Gerry made 34 for the hosts.
