AFTER a long wait, Werrington get their ECB Cornwall Premier League campaign underway tomorrow when they make the long trip down to Helston (1pm).

The Ladycross outfit surprised many in finishing fourth last summer following two seasons of struggle after several departures.

However, skipper Nick Lawson has done a good job to get them moving again in the right direction, and having brought in Sri Lankan overseas star Thiluna Dilshan and Tintagel all-rounder Ryan Pooley, hopes are high for another good season.

Dilshan is set to open the batting and bowl ten overs of leg-spin, a package all clubs in the division would love to have.

Pooley is likely to bat in the middle order and bowl his seamers when required.

As for the rest of the team, John Moon is at university to begin with, but with seamer Sam Hockin fit again to bowl having played as an opening batsman for the majority of last summer, Lawson has plenty of options when picking his side.

Hockin may open again, ensuring a long batting line-up down to nine.

WERRINGTON: Thiluna Dilshan, Sam Hockin, Adam Hodgson, Ben Smeeth, Mark Gribble, Ben Jenkin, Ryan Pooley, George Rickard, Nick Lawson (capt, wkt), Dan Barnard, Mark Taskis.

CALLINGTON head down to Camborne hoping to avoid a third successive last day battle against the drop.

Cally have assembled another strong side on paper which is being captained by former county star Graham Wagg.

Wagg was the club’s professional for the final six games of last summer, but despite living in Cardiff, has agreed to be the skipper.

Former Somerset leg-spinner Max Waller has also joined having spent the last two years at St Just and his bowling, superb fielding and middle-order hitting should be a huge hit.

South African Liam Lindsay is back for a second season and goes in at first drop ahead of Wagg and Waller.

Hard-hitting batsman Matt Shepherd is scheduled to come in at six, while director of cricket Joe White is back keeping after Fred Wilkinson’s departure to Wadebridge.

CALLINGTON: Aidan Libby, Luke Brenton, Liam Lindsay, Graham Wagg (capt), Max Waller, Matt Shepherd, Toby May, Joe White (wkt), Ben Ellis, Ben Alford, Harry Sawyers.

DIVISION TWO EAST

Although there are no Post area clubs in County Division One anymore, more than half a dozen are in the third-tier.

Early leaders St Minver, who have won at Callington Seconds and beaten Tintagel, head up to Werrington Seconds who have yet to play.

St Minver have to do without opening batsman and wicket-keeper Ben Hawken and batsman Kelvin Lockwood with their places going to Ben Lamb and Jack Gill.

Werrington have a similar team to last year although the presence of Tom Lyle who is focusing on second team cricket after stepping up to the first team last summer, is a big boost.

New skipper Jason Seldon also gives a debut to Leo McDonnell who is back at the club after spells at Holsworthy and Tintagel, but James Adams and Dan Howgill are at university until June.

WERRINGTON SECONDS: Rob May, Marley May, Hugh Tomkinson, Tom Lyle, Leo McDonnell, Ian Searle, Jordan Duke, Rob Dymond (wkt), Jason Seldon (capt), Ian Worsnip, Gareth Cox.

ST MINVER: Ryan Pooley, Antony Ash (wkt), Ben Lamb, Jonny Centini (capt), Alek Gill, Reece Thompson, Rob Hawken, Neil Meneer, Kieran Gill, Dean Jeffery, Jack Gill.

CALLINGTON Seconds got their first win of the season at Bude last weekend and welcome Holsworthy who did likewise against St Blazey.

Cally ran out victors by 99 runs while Holsworthy’s six-wicket victory was fairly comfortable.

With Moores Park out of action due to Callington’s MayFest celebrations, the match is being played at Liskeard.

Callington are boosted by the inclusion of teenage batsman James Brenton in place of the unavailable Peter Tancock.

Holsworthy also make just one alteration as South African overseas star Herschelle Poggenpoel is in the country and takes the place of batsman Sam Stacey.

CALLINGTON SECONDS: Alex Robinson (wkt), Richard Brown (capt), Blake Tancock, James Brenton, Charlie Coates, Tom Neville, Jim Shorten, Joe Coates, Rhys Hodge, Harvey Poad, Spencer Whatley.

HOLSWORTHY: Jack May, Jack Greening, Herschelle Poggenpoel, Ryan Walter (capt), Aiden Gerry, Dan Smith, Chris Pomeroy (wkt), Brendan Harris, Guy Beagley, Rob Mitchell, Graham Wild.

BUDE’S batting cost them dear as they were dismissed for just 110 at home to Callington, but skipper Warren Rumble has a much stronger team at his disposal for their trip to South Petherwin who have yet to play.

Bude’s Australian left-armer Brett Hunter has arrived in the country for a second summer and will add some pace, while all-rounder Andrew De Rosa and seamer Mark Whitefield are both back from holiday.

Chris Parkes, who plays a handful of games when he is back in the area, is missing, as are wicket-keeper Harry Dymond and Troy Buckingham.

South Petherwin have all of their big hitters available as they aim to avoid a battle against the drop.

A superb victory at Holsworthy on the final day ensured their survival.

New signing Owen Barnes may take the new ball while James Cawsey, who scores plenty of runs and takes wickets in the seconds, is also in the side.

SOUTH PETHERWIN: Michael Bolt, Adrian Warne, Andrew Brenton, Sam Pengelly, Jacob Masters (capt, wkt), Paul Clements, James Cawsey, Adam Howgill, Adrian Clements, Owen Barnes, Kevin Horrell.

BUDE: Wayne Adams, James Sharman, Warren Rumble (capt, wkt), Matt Whitefield, Andrew De Rosa, Matt Williams, Matt Mansbridge, James Turner, Anthony Buchanan, Mark Whitefield, Brett Hunter.

TINTAGEL showed some good fight at St Minver last week in their season opener having been dismissed for just 106, although the Knights will hope for better with the bat when they welcome St Austell Seconds.

New skipper Matt Jolliffe has to do without wicket-keeper Sam Abbott and opener Adrian Pooley from last week’s side with batsmen Martin Seldon and Dan Jones coming into an otherwise unchanged squad.

A visa problem meant the overseas they had lined up is not coming now, although the club are working hard to seek a replacement.

St Austell arrive having eased past relegated Lanhydrock last Saturday, but key man James Carter is back in the first team having taken 5-23 last weekend.

TINTAGEL: Callum Flew, Dan Jones, Tom Parsons, Jordan Burnard, Matt Jolliffe (capt, wkt), Martin Seldon, Jordan Blanchard, Gyles Reynolds, Simon Fry, James Ellis, Harry Daly.

Elsewhere in the division, Lanhydrock welcome Menheniot-Looe as they look to kickstart their season, while Ladock, who beat Menheniot in their opener last week, head to St Blazey.

DIVISION THREE EAST

AFTER four successive cancellations, Launceston aim to get their season up and running when they welcome neighbours Werrington Thirds to Lawhitton.

Werrington have had one run out, a 57-run defeat at Luckett.

Luckett beat Tideford last weekend to build on their previous success, and they start as firm favourites when the welcome promoted Liskeard to Chapel Field.

Following several days of sun, a high-scoring game is likely with the small ground making run-scoring much easier.

Elsewhere in the division, Boconnoc head to Grampound Road Seconds with both sides having won last week, while Callington Thirds, who were beaten at Saltash St Stephens on Bank Holiday Monday, make the long trip down to Newquay.

Tideford also head west as they go to Roche Seconds while neighbours Saltash St Stephens welcome St Austell Thirds who have two victories to their name.

DIVISION FOUR EAST

LAUNCESTON Seconds have their first outing of the season tomorrow when they make the trip down the A30 to St Stephen who have already had three games, two of which they’ve lost.

St Minver Seconds were narrowly beaten by their Lanhydrock counterparts on Bank Holiday Monday, and they have a visit from Buckland Monachorum.

Elsewhere in the division, relegated St Neot, who started with a four-run success at promoted Duloe last weekend, entertain Grampound Road Thirds, while the other side that came down, Pencarrow entertain Duloe.

Menheniot-Looe Seconds welcome their Lanhydrock counterparts to Fourgates looking to build on their seven-wicket victory at St Stephen, while St Blazey who eased to victory at St Stephen by nine wickets 13 days ago, travel to promoted Newquay Thirds.

DIVISION FIVE EAST

GUNNISLAKE have yet to play this season and their first outing sees them welcome a Gorran side that have four wins from four.

Gunni had a solid season back last summer following promotion, and will hope for another mid-table finish.

South Petherwin Seconds have a win and a loss and make the trip up to a Bude side who are much strengthened following two early losses to Gorran and St Stephen Seconds.

Werrington Fourths haven’t got a game in yet and welcome Wadebridge Thirds, while up the A388 at Holsworthy, their seconds entertain St Stephen Seconds.

The other games see St Austell Fourths welcome promoted Saltash St Stephens Seconds and a Clay country derby between Bugle and Roche Thirds at Sandy Lane.

DIVISION SIX EAST

FIVE games are scheduled in the bottom tier tomorrow with games at Boconnoc, Launcestom, Duloe, St Stephen and Tideford.

Boconnoc Seconds have a derby date with Lanhydrock Thirds, while Launceston Thirds’ first outing sees them entertain Tintagel Seconds.

St Neot Seconds make the short trip to Duloe to tackle Menheniot-Looe Thirds, while close by, the second teams of Tideford and Luckett clash at Port Eliot Estate Ground.

Newly-formed St Stephen Thirds entertain Newquay Fourths in the other game.
