Cornwall Cricket League Division Two East round-up – Saturday, August 10
WERRINGTON Seconds’ hopes of winning the title were given a huge boost by the weather on Saturday as they won at Menheniot-Looe and St Austell Seconds saw their home clash with St Minver abandoned.
It was a superb effort from Werrington who, when the rain set in at Fourgates, were under the cosh with Menheniot rattling along to 223-5 from just 35.1 overs.
Following a near two-hour delay, as are the rules from Division Two down, it meant Werrington had the same amount of overs to chase the score, and they did it with three wickets and five balls to spare.
Earlier in the day, fifties from Luke Ripley and Steve Kidd set Menheniot on their way, although James Adams (3-43 from 8.1) and Nick Oldaker (2-50) halted the momentum somewhat.
Werrington lost openers Rob May and Dan Howgill for double digit scores, but it was Tom Lyle’s unbeaten 73 that provided the glue.
He struck seven fours in his knock, and received fine support from Hugh Tomkinson (30), James Adams (28) and skipper Jason Seldon (21no) as they moved 29 points clear.
However, St Austell have two games in-hand despite picking up just eight against visiting St Minver.
It was evenly-poised at 72-4 after 21 overs with Alek Gill’s off-spin accounting for a couple of the home batsmen.
Bottom side Tintagel were well beaten at in-form St Blazey.
With an average forecast, Blazey attacked from the off having been sent in as openers Rory Dixon and Ben Griffiths put on 90.
The players went off for rain after 20 overs with the score at 139-1 before Blazey added another 35 in the next five to set a challenging 174-4.
Only Gyles Reynolds (1-36 off 7) kept the runs down.
Tintagel were dismissed for just 84 in reply in 18.5 overs despite a run-a-ball 48 from West Indian Akobe Earle.
He struck seven fours in his knock and was still there at the end, but of the rest nobody made more than nine.
Herschelle Poggenpoel made it back-to-back hundreds as Holsworthy thrashed South Petherwin by 157 runs at Stanhope Park.
In a game reduced to 38 overs, it was Petherwin who started brightly as Jack Greening was bowled by Paul Clements (1-15 off nine) for a single.
But skipper Ryan Walter, batting in an unfamiliar opening role, made 46 and shared a fine stand of 167 with Poggenpoel.
Walter was eventually caught off James Weeks before Aiden Gerry’s unbeaten 22 got them up to an imposing 229-4.
Poggenpoel’s century saw him construct 101 not out with ten fours.
Petherwin were then rolled out for just 72 in 27 overs.
Opening bowlers Jack Greening (2-16) and Graham Wild (2-15) shared four of the first five before Rob Mitchell (3-21) and debutant Adam Lovejoy (2-8) got involved.
For Petherwin, only Billy Martin (14) and Adrian Martin (10) reached double figures.
Lanhydrock picked up a priceless victory in their quest to finish outside of the bottom four as they defeated high-flying Callington Seconds by seven wickets.
Cally were 82-3 after 22 overs when a long rain break put an end to their innings, meaning Lanhydrcok had to get 83 in the same time.
They reached it with more than three overs to spare as openers Jamie Eldridge and Simon Benney made 20s.
Earlier in the day, Nick Parker was 38 not out.
Bude’s long trip to Ladock ended in frustration as just 15.2 overs were bowled.
The hosts raced along to 82-0 with Alex Ridd unbeaten on 51 when the rain set in for the afternoon.
