WITH Parliament back in session on Monday, I’ll be heading back up to Westminster to bring forward the many issues that have come through casework during this very productive recess. While I’ll be focused on raising your concerns in Parliament, I’ll also continue spending time here in North Cornwall, ensuring our community’s needs are voiced and acted on.
One priority I’ll be continuing to address is the recent cancellation of the National Express 503 service. This route was essential for residents from Bodmin, Wadebridge, St Columb Major, and beyond, who now face significant challenges reaching places like Exeter or London. I’ve received numerous emails from those affected, and in my recent TV interview, I emphasised just how vital this service was for so many. We’re continuing to gather support through our petition, and I’ve requested a meeting with National Express to discuss potential solutions to reinstate the service. If you haven’t yet signed the petition, please consider adding your name to help us demonstrate just how critical this service is for North Cornwall. If you have used this service yourself, you’ll know firsthand how important it is. If you’d like to sign up to the petition, search for ‘Ben Maguire MP’ on Facebook to find our petition titled: ‘Reinstate Cornwall’s National Express 503 service’, on a site called Change.org
Another pressing issue is the controversial seaweed farm plans around Port Isaac Bay. I’ve been working very closely and proactively with one of the main campaigns, putting together a detailed briefing ahead of my meeting with the Minister of State for Food Security and Rural Affairs. I also spoke with ITV News West Country about the urgent need for a comprehensive review of the approval process, which has left our local communities feeling unheard. These proposed changes would better protect our coastline and ensure more transparent and community-focused decision-making.
As always, supporting local farmers remains a priority, and I am pleased to have strengthened my commitment to Fairtrade. Farmers in Cornwall and across the globe deserve fair compensation for their hard work, and I’ll be working with Fairtrade campaigners to champion this cause. Ensuring farmers receive fair value for their produce is essential for maintaining sustainable, thriving communities, and I’m eager to make sure that this message is heard loud and clear.
Parliamentary recess has been an invaluable time to engage directly with many of you, and I’m grateful for the feedback and support that has been shared. As always, my work will be split between Westminster and North Cornwall, so please do not hesitate to reach out if there are any concerns or issues you’d like to discuss. My email is [email protected] if you’d like to reach out.
Ben Maguire
Liberal Democrat MP for North Cornwall
