THE Young Farmers Club (YFC) tent at Launceston Show was full to the brim with colourful and vibrant displays and a host of visitors to admire them.
Along with the usual cookery and craft competitions, new to the tent this year was the best wool fleece competition, which was judged by an official British Wool Board member.
Speaking about the team’s efforts at this year’s show, Amy Trehane, chairman of Launceston YFC, said: “There have been loads of entries at a really high standard this year. It is a great show and has really been a good team effort.
“We have had the cubicle theme for the displays this year, which I think is great and really good for the children, who seem to be enjoying them.”
When asked if the weather had affected the YFC tent, Amy said: “No, it has been fine for us today — yesterday however was a different matter. The tent was leaking a little over by some of the exhibits — there were a few puddles — but other than that I think it has increased the number of visitors as they have all come in for shelter!”
On show day there were many people filling the YFC tent ready to buy refreshments and peruse all the hard work members had put into their displays.
Speaking about the benefits of having a tent at the show, former Launceston YFC chairman, Oliver Stephens, said: “Launceston Show is a good shop window for the YFC, where we are able to demonstrate what goes on at young farmers. So to have a full and vibrant tent can only bring in new blood to the clubs, as people’s interest in what we do is sparked.”
Speaking about the events of the day, Matthew Halls, member of Launceston YFC, said: “We have had lots of entries today which we are very pleased about. There has been a high standard across all the competitions — the cookery judges were very impressed with what was presented and the best exhibit was definitely the collage of Postman Pat’s cat ‘Jess’.”
“We will be holding the more practical events later in the afternoon with a welly wang and sheaf pitch over a bar — I’m not very good at that one!”
Matthew explained that new to the tent this year was the sheep fleeces display. He said: “The British Wool Board were very interested in getting the YFC involved with a fleece competition this year. We were also very lucky to have an actual wool board judge come in for that event!”
“We have also been presented with two new cups, one from ‘Flowers by Donna’ and another by Launceston Camera Club, so we must say thanks to them!”
