THE Dean Heritage Centre is in contention to hold a world record for the largest carved caterpillar.

Children's book classic The Very Hungry Caterpillar is arriving at the Soudley-based museum on May 2 to May 4.

Staff and chainsaw carvers have been busy bringing the story to life with carvings as part of its new woodland trail.

The launch weekend will see a hive of fun, adventures and activities including a bouncy castle, face-painting, stalls, workshops, and the official Eric the caterpillar making regular appearances.

Centre manager, Mark Clancy said: "We are extremely excited to be launching this new woodland trail, the trail is the first of its kind in the UK and we are very proud that the author Eric Carle granted us permission.

"The carvings are all skilfully carved by our onsite carvers using coastal redwood. We also are in contention to hold a world record for the biggest carved caterpillar. The launch weekend over the May Day Bank Holiday will be fun-filled for all with stalls, bouncy castles, workshops, and visits from the official caterpillar and lots more."
