A BEACON to mark the 70th anniversary of VE Day will now be lit in the centre of Brecon, rather than on the summit of Pen-y-Fan.

It had been planned to light the beacon at sundown, 9.32pm on Friday, May 8 at the top of the highest peak in southern Wales but heavy rain and strong winds have forced organisers to amend their plans.

The lighting of the Beacon will now take place on Friday at the paved square area by the monument in the centre of the Bulwark, Brecon by the Wellington Hotel at 9.32pm.

A two minute silence and short service will also be held at 3pm on Friday at Brecon's Cenotaph, St Mary's Church in the town centre.

The events mark the 70th anniversary of Victory in Europe VE Day when Allied Forces defeated the Nazis. The war continued in the far east until August 1945.

Brecon Cathedral will also ring its bells at 11am on Saturday, May 9 and the Choral Evensong to include the commemoration of the end of the war in Europe will be held on Sunday, May 10 at 3.30pm at the Cathedral.
