A DANCE group for young people is preparing to take to the stage for its debut show.

Magical Tots was founded by local resident Amy Jane in October 2022 after an unsuccessful search for a fun, age-appropriate local dance class for her 18 month old.

A fully qualified Primary School Teacher specialising in early years and with a vast background in musical theatre, this dilemma got Amy thinking “why am I not offering toddler, preschool and early years dance classes to local children?”

Speaking to the Post, Amy explained: “From my experience of being a primary school teacher, I recognised the benefits of children learning through the arts, being physically active and how important the first five years are for development. I wanted to create a magical class where children were inspired, where they could achieve academically against the EYFS Curriculum preparing them for school, as well as developing a love for dance, exploring a range of styles and techniques through exciting props and activities.”

Since then, the group has grown and grown, with now over 100 children experiencing a Magical Tots class every week, whether that be at one of four venues or at the nurseries and preschools that the group delivers weekly sessions in.

Now, heading towards its second anniversary the group is set to take to the HATS Theatre stage for its debut dance show.

On July 14, 50 tiny dancers aged from 18 months to six-years-old from Bradworthy, Bude, Bideford and Holsworthy will be performing as part of the group’s ‘Disney vs Divas’ production.

Amy explained:  “This is most of the children’s first time performing on a big stage to an audience and is designed to build their confidence and offer them an amazing experience of performing in a working theatre. The show is named ‘Disney Vs Divas' as not only am I a huge Disney fan, our tiny dancers love Disney music too and recognise the songs from films they have watched.

“We also enjoy dancing to music by famous pop stars including well known classics that are often used in popular children’s movies - this is where the Divas part of the show name comes from!”

So far, the production has sold almost all 250 seats and looks set to be a sellout performance.
