The dreams of the Tintagel Branch of the Royal British Legion were realised on Saturday, July 31.
After a number of years in the planning, it was time to dedicate a memorial stone in the village. It was the hope of the branch's past president Ivan Nute that a memorial be erected in the village to remind villagers and visitors that men gave their lives for their country in past conflicts.
The wording on the stone reads: 'In Remembrance of those from the Parish of Tintagel who gave their lives for their Country', followed by, 'And when you go Home, tell them of us and say, for your tomorrow we gave our today.'
The memorial was erected in Trevena Square and there was a large crowd of locals and visitors including legion members from Camelford and Delabole who attended the dedication service.
Thanks were expressed to Trebarwith Stoneworks for supplying the stone and inscription, Trecarne Quarry for the paving slates and to Reg Climo for installing the whole memorial. The stone was unveiled by the daughter of the late Ivan Nute, Cynthia Dawson, who said how delighted her father would have been to see this day.
The dedication of the stone was carried out by ministers from the local churches Rev John Barfoot, Rev Bryan Ede and Father Bryan Storey. This was followed by the laying of a wreath by Denzil Flew on behalf of the legion. The Last Post and Reveille were sounded by Lisa Hannah from Camelford Town Band and the service was concluded.
This was a memorable day rounded off with light refreshments in the chapel Sunday school organised by Mrs Gladys Cook. Tintagel now has a wonderful addition in the square which will be appreciated by everyone who sees it.
