Operation Nightingale is Herefordshire Police's long standing response to crime in rural areas and the county's market towns. The operation runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and targets the criminals who steal from us.
Within the overall operation is specific targeted activities that focus upon key areas. For example, we work closely with the county's NFU Mutual branches to deliver the 'Stop that Thief' initiative. This aims to help farms, businesses and local communities develop suitable crime prevention defences at their homes and businesses.
You may not be aware that West Mercia Police offer a free crime prevention advice service. If you wish to access it then please contact your local Safer Neighbourhood Team – their details can be found online http://www.westcmercia.police.uk">www.westcmercia.police.uk.
Rural Crime is not only a priority for West Mercia Police. A new national service, The Rural Crime Network has been established. It is about organisations who tackle any issue, relating to crime in rural areas, sharing information and ideas about improving life for communities. Finally, if you have someone 'cold calling' at your home or business DO NOT buy anything off them. By law they have to give you a period to 'cool off' before committing to buying anything. If you are in anyway suspicious about them try and record their vehicle registration number – if it is safe to do so – and report it to the police by dialling 101 or 999 if it is an emergency.
