A Pembroke mum trying to set up a cabin in memory of her late son, to provide others with support and advice, has spoken of her struggle to gain planning permission for the facility.
Derek Brundrett (fondly known as Dezza), a Pembroke pupil, sadly took his own life in December 2013 when he was 14-years-old, because of the stresses and struggles he was facing, his mother Kristina Wray says.
Since his death, Kristina and others have been working on trying to set up 'Dezza's Cabin' - a place for young people to access advice on bullying and self harm, as well as counselling services, but have hit planning permission problems.
"First and foremost we are having trouble trying to locate an area to be able to place two cabins, one much smaller than the other. We have the cabins, but can't finish the work on them until we have moved them to a more permanent area," said Kristina, explaining that 'Dezza's Cabin' would be a charitable run counselling/signposting centre where children and parents would be able to gain valuable information, assistance and help as and when needed.
"The cabin would be like an old style doctors surgery where people can walk in and gain help and assistance immediately.
"We have applied to the county council on a couple of occasions to place the cabins in good locations for the children and parents to gain easy access, i.e. within walking distance. The last planning permission refusal was the biggest setback, as it was the perfect location right by the Pembroke Comprehensive School.
"The planning department said it would ruin the view of the field opposite the school, even though the owner or the field was more than willing to let us locate them there free of charge. For another location which would have been ok, we could not fund the insurance due to poor lighting and slippery surfaces in bad weather," she continued.
Kristina is hoping that someone might come forward who is willing to lease or donate an area to put these cabins up, so that the service can get up and running once and for all.
"Children and parents of Pembrokeshire really need this kind of support and as generations go on, parents and children are finding general day to day life can be a huge challenge, especially with the teenagers of today.
"Please help and give us the location we need to place these cabins and get the support in place," added Kristina.
