WITH Holsworthy second team home fixture against Elburton called off due to a waterlogged Upcott Field, this allowed Magpie fans to make the long trek to Falmouth to watch the first team in action, writes Tony Bayley.
Played on a heavy pitch, coupled with a strong swirling wind, both teams adapted well to the conditions. With Alan Carey taking charge for the first time as Falmouth's new manager, Holsworthy's task was always going to be that bit harder.
Holsworthy looked sharp from the off and with new signing, Tye Lavers in at centre back in place of Gavin Cornish, the defence looked good. Levi Landricombe had a superb game up front and had Holsworthy's first chance hitting the upright with a rising shot, minutes later heading over with the 'keeper well beaten.
At the other end, Falmouth had strong penalty claims waved away when Wayne Riley clearly fouled Glen Squires inside the box. Referee Tim Burley only gave a free kick outside the area.
This proved to be the turning point of the match, as minutes later a flowing Holsworthy move and a neat one, two movement split the home defence allowing young Sam Cameron to slide the ball into an empty net.
Falmouth kept pushing forward and only a fine double save from Dean Chidley prevented Falmouth from drawing level. It should have been 2-0 but Landricombe missed an open goal.
As the second half started memories of the second period at Witheridge came back, managers Mickey Clarke and Keith Rickard must have reminded the players of that defeat. We need not have worried as Holsworthy dominated for long periods.
Levi Landricombe superbly lobbed the 'keeper from at least 25 yards out, a dream goal that any striker would be proud of. Stuart Rickard and Ian Rowe dug in hard in the midfield preventing Falmouth getting through as has happened in the past.
Yet again to their credit, Falmouth kept pushing forward and visiting 'keeper Dean Chidley made an excellent full length save and blocked the second attempt. Dean might lack a little in height and weight but his handling agility and reading of the game is excellent. A good performance.
Levi was again in the thick of things creating an opening out of nothing, turning inside 20 yards out and striking a left foot shot that smacked against the post. His follow up effort was kicked off the line. Again, Man of the match, Dean Chidley, thwarted the home forwards when saving first at the feet of Matt Moore, then denying Sam Hunter.
Alan Clarke came on for the last 15 minutes up front and promptly sliding a inch perfect ball through to Landricombe to slip the ball under the advancing Falmouth 'keeper.
Falmouth scored a late consolation goal through Glen Squires. But this was Holsworthy's day. A hard working team effort, when we got the result we so badly needed. This win can only help team morale and confidence. I'm sure managers Mickey Clarke and Keith Rickard will have enjoyed their Saturday night.
