DUCHY College, Stoke Climsland, had a very sunny finale to its 2016 - 2017 British Showjumping season with competitors traveling from as far afield as Camborne and Newton Abbot to compete at the Category 1 show.

The day started with Club/Unaffiliated classes which were well supported by riders from Cornwall and Devon with local rider Tilly Bassett taking the pony section of a strong 80cm class and second in the 90cm on Grattons Moonbeam.

The duo, who regularly represent Callington Community College, are currently at the top of the national 70cm British Showjumping Schools League.

The horse section of the 80cm class was won by club member Alison Monk on John Cole’s Cosette III.

The pair had a very successful season competing at the college gaining numerous wins under their belt and are currently ranked first in the Southwest 1m Club league.

The afternoon started with British Showjumping Seniors, where Plymouth-based rider, Sadie Rogers had a very successful afternoon on her horse Larry Larino — the pair winning both the 95cm Amateur and Senior Discovery/1m Open.

Rogers said: “I always make a point of trying to compete at Duchy over the winter as there is such a friendly atmosphere and everyone is so helpful. I have had Larry for just over a year, he is a lovely little horse who always tries his heart out for me.”

The Heffernan brothers, Josh and Zac dominated the Pony British Novice/80cm Open, taking first and second place.

Ellie Garland, who is on her last year riding ponies, won the Pony Discovery on Ajax II.

Ellie, who is the daughter of Duchy College course manager, Louise Garland, competed in her first senior competition on Annette Allen’s SH Bally Caretino, the pair gaining a respectable double clear and second place in the 95cm Amateur.

Equine course manager and event organiser, Louise Garland, said: “We have had a fantastic season and would like to thank our staff, students and officials for their amazing support, without which we would not be able to run these valuable competitions.”

Students Jasmine Smith and Beth Ford worked tirelessly throughout the day carrying out a variety of tasks including tea and coffee making, pole picking and assisting competitors.

The officials were very complimentary on their hard work and enthusiasm throughout the day.

Equine Team Lead, Nicky du Plessis, said: “As a British Showjumping accredited centre we enjoy running affiliated shows for the local equestrian community, aiming to provide a platform for both senior and junior riders from Unaffiliated up to Newcomers. We endeavour to be a friendly and encouraging centre.”
