STERTS Theatre at Upton Cross on Bodmin Moor has chosen its ‘Volunteer of the Year’, a couple from South Petherwin.

Each year the theatre asks its volunteers to vote for the Volunteer of the Year and this year the accolade went to a local couple from South Petherwin.

Sue and Peter Vernon have volunteered, and Peter has also acted, in the theatre for the last ten years and were surprised and delighted to win the award after a busy year ‘working’ there.

They feel proud to be associated with such an amazing centre for the arts, which encourages and showcases an enormous amount of local talent from a very wide area around Sterts.

Volunteer Cornwall hosted an awards lunch, for all Cornwall Volunteers of the Year, at the Eden Project, where Sue and Peter were named overall winners in the culture category, and presented with an engraved glass bowl.

Sterts have also given them an overnight stay in a hotel of their choice, from a charity called ‘Room for Award’, in recognition of their loyalty.

Peter said: “It is great fun volunteering at Sterts where actors, volunteers and audience members all become friends and enjoy meeting up and enjoying their time at this unique location. It is very satisfying to be part of the Sterts family and we are proud of the amazingly professional productions they stage year after year.”

The theatre is run almost entirely by volunteers, and their main income is derived from ticket sales, plus additional sales made in the café and selling confectionary.
