THE glorious weather drew a bumper crowd to the Countryman’s Fair at Werrington Park Estate on Sunday.

The biannual event attracts thousands of people from across the region, with this year thought to have drawn a bumper crowd of around 9,000 or 10,000 people.

For this year’s fair there are two main beneficiaries — The Merlin MS Centre and The South West MS Centre.

There was fun for all the family, with two spectacular displays from the Devil’s Horsemen stunt riders, gun dog scurries, massed parade of hounds, falconry displays, Dartmoor pony display, fly fishing demonstrations and a big craft and food tent that stayed busy throughout the day.

Tom Williams, who is on the organising committee and whose family owns Werrington Park, said: “We do it every two years and it’s a great way to raise money for local charities — all the proceeds go to various local charities and organisations. This year the main beneficiaries are The Merlin MS Centre and The South West MS Centre.

“We did have a bumper year on the gates down to the good weather. Two years ago we had 8,000 people through the gate, I think we will be up on that number this year — 9,000 or 10,000.

“It went very smoothly. The very hot weather brings some challenges itself but there were no major hiccups, everyone seemed to be happy.”

The date of the next Countryman’s Fair is Sunday, August 2, 2020.
