CAN anyone help the Holsworthy and Stratton Agricultural Show this year achieve its goal of earning a Guinness World Record for welly wanging?
The show’s organisers are calling on families and visitors to put their welly throwing skills to the test on Thursday, August 23, as part of an official world record attempt for the most number of Wellington boots thrown simultaneously.
With the current record standing at 636 wellies, the aim is to see 800 boots thrown in the air at the show.
The challenge is being run by the show committee and supported by Mole Valley Farmers’ Holsworthy store with boots donated by key suppliers, Footsure.
Show committee members and local farmer, Lisa Lucas initially came up with the idea of setting a world record. She says it will be the centre piece of the show, which will also include the usual array of attractions, including livestock showing, local food and drink, crafts and family entertainment. Lisa said: “We’re not just your average show. We wanted to do something really unique and entertaining that all of the local community could get involved in.
“We’d like to thank Mole Valley and Footsure as it would have been really difficult to get this off the ground without them.”
Ian Rolinson, member of the show committee and commercial business manager for Mole Valley Farmers Holsworthy store, said: “It’s a fantastic opportunity to have a great day at your local agricultural show and come home a world record holder. If we can get 800 people throwing wellies, it should be quite a spectacle and a fun day out for all the family.”
The attempt will take place on the afternoon of the show and visitors on the day will be asked to pick up a raffle ticket to show their interest in taking part in the record attempt, as a means of gauging numbers. The attempt will then be carefully marshaled and assessed by an independent adjudicator.
The show committee is currently looking at options for recycling the wellies after the record attempt and would welcome any suggestions from businesses.
If anyone has any suggestions they are asked to call Mr Rolinson on 07733224519.
