With prostate cancer claiming the lives of up to 30 men each day in the UK, it is one of the most common male-specific illnesses in the country, and the second biggest killer after lung cancer.

That is why this Father's Day (June 21) Narberth and Whitland Rotary Club will join thousands of charity supporters from across the UK to get on their bike and take part in the national fundraising effort and biggest cycling event of its kind, the 'Rotary Ride'.

Narberth and Whitland Rotary Club is urging members of the public to put on their lycra and join them at Bloomfield Community Centre, Narberth, to take part in their Father's Day Bike Ride to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK.

There will be two rides taking place on the day, including a 15 and 25-mile cycle route starting at 10 am. The ride will conclude with a BBQ at Cresswell Quay and prizes will be awarded for those who have raised the most sponsorship money.

The Rotary Ride is a nationwide event organised by Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland, and will help to raise money and awareness of prostate cancer, a disease that currently affects one in eight men during their lifetime, with over 300,000 men in the UK currently living with the disease.

Families and individuals across Narberth and Whitland are being encouraged to join the already registered 20,000 riders and take part in the rides to help fundraise for this life-saving research.

Members of the public are invited to take part by joining in the Father's Day Bike Ride and there's a range of rides to choose from, including family fun rides, enthusiast coastal routes and even static rides at local gyms and sports centres.

Mary Adams, from the Narberth and Whitland Rotary Club, explained: "Of course it's not just fathers who are affected by this deadly disease, it's friends, brothers, sons or even your neighbour. That's why we're holding this ride in Narberth and Whitland to help support those affected by prostate cancer, and we felt Father's Day was a great way for people to spend quality time together while raising money and awareness for charity."

She added: "It is a chance for members of the public, no matter how young or old, to get on their bikes and join us. We wanted to create an event that members of the public and Rotarians alike could all get involved in and with over 20,000 participants signed up so far, it is sure to be an incredible day."

Mark Bishop, director of fundraising at Prostate Cancer UK, commented: "It's fantastic to see Rotarians helping Prostate Cancer UK raise funds and awareness of a disease, which kills one man every hour in the UK. We wish those taking part all the best with their cycle ride, and most of all to have a great day out."
