PAUL Turpin (Carlyon Bay) and Richard Sadler (Killiow) produced scintillating golf to win the 30th White Hart Hotel Fourball Championship by four shots in record style at Launceston.
Their two-day total of 18-under-par 122 was the lowest total ever posted. The previous best was 124, last achieved in 2001 by current European seniors tour winner Kevin Spurgeon, during his days as head professional at Dudsbury, and Mark Wiggett who is still a Dudsbury touring professional.
The Cornish pair, who linked up for the first time, set the benchmark with a remarkable ten-under-par 60 in the first round. They started comfortably with three birdies in the front nine. Then they picked up shots at five of the next six holes and completed an astonishing back nine of 27 with an eagle at the par-fiver last.
They suffered a slight setback on the second day by dropping their only shot on the second. They followed with four successive birdies and added three more before again making an eagle on the last for a round of 62.
It was always going to be a winning total although occasional player Graham Coombe, now at Palleg Golf Club near Swansea after a long career at Isle of Wedmore, and his former Somerset county colleague Neil Holman (Torbay Driving Range) had other ideas.
After an indifferent 69 including three birdies and two dropped shots which left them in a share of 32nd spot, they also produced a ten-under round of the day of 60 to storm into fifth place.
They returned seven-under for the front nine – with pars at the third and eighth – and picked up further shots at the 10th, 11th and 18th.
Wiggett, who has since teamed up with his pal and Dudsbury colleague Lee Thompson, took second spot on 126 (64+62) while Welshmen Matthew Griffiths (Oakdale) and Adam Constable (Cardiff) shot 62 and 65 to claim third.
