SUPERMARKET volunteers put their backs into clearing a Callington footpath that couldn’t be strimmed because of a rare plant recently.

Six workers from the town’s Tesco spent a hot Sunday morning up Kit Hill hacking back brambles and branches from an overgrown bridle path, so that rare Cornish bladder-seed plants, which are native to the hill, could be spared.

Countryside ranger, Jenny Heskett, who looks after Kit Hill Country Park, thanked the volunteers for their hard work.

She said: “I would not have been able to get that path cut back without volunteer help, because it is so rocky.

“The path also has the red data book species plant, Cornish bladder-seed beside it, so it was not suitable to give to a strimming gang.”

Tesco manager, Saffron Ray, who organised the volunteers, said: “We were delighted to support Jenny’s conservation efforts, while helping to improve access to the park for everyone to enjoy.”
