CAMELFORD’S town mayor, Rob Rotchell, and town councillor Kirsty Ferguson recently conducted the first public consultation regarding the future of the town’s library, which is due to close on March 31 2017.
The town council has recently expressed an interest in the running of the library, but, as with everything, costs are involved, meaning they would need to raise funds to employ a librarian who would oversee the day-to-day running of the library and the One Stop Shop.
This would incur a 50p weekly increase on the council tax, based on a Band D property.
On Wednesday, August 24, Cllr Rotchell and Cllr Ferguson explained what this would mean for the people of Camelford and asked for their opinions as they passed by.
Cllr Ferguson said: “Both the mayor and I were very pleased to receive such positivity from the passing residents. This town cannot stand to lose another vital service after the closure of our banks.
“One parent explained to her daughter what might happen to the library and she broke down in tears. She was concerned she would be unable to do the summer reading challenge again. It broke my heart.”
The council is hoping to do another public survey near the schools when they return for the new term, in order to gauge the level of support from parents.
