LAUNCESTON’S Women’s Section of the Royal British Legion has been busy all year creating a fitting tribute to mark 100 years since the end of the First World War.

The beautiful ‘poppy cascade’ will go on show to the public later this month, when it will be placed on the war memorial in the town square.

The Women’s Section started cutting poppies out of vinyl in January — big, medium and small — which have been tied onto a backing to create an effective display.

More than 500 poppies were cut, with 400 on the cascade, and the Women’s Section hopes to place the remaining 100 big poppies on lampposts around the town and along the Link Road.

Some local businesses have been invited to ‘sponsor’ a poppy for £10.

The cascade itself is around 20ft long, and was finished in the last week of September.

Jennie Bailey, secretary of the Women’s Section, said: “We had a few weeks off during the year, but not many! It’s been hard work.

“I thought it would be nice to do something different and that was a bit visual.”

The Women’s Section expressed its thanks to Threads, where they sourced the material, and to Terry Graves, who kindly agreed to place the cascade on the war memorial free of charge.

It will go up on October 26, with the launch of this year’s Poppy Appeal on the 27th and will stay up for around three weeks.

Jennie added Launceston library has asked if it can display the cascade afterwards.
