AFTER an intensive training programme, North Devon dairy farmer Philip Hardwick has started 2009 on a high note by making his first solo flight as a glider pilot.
Father of three Phil, of Pancrasweek, near Holsworthy, achieved his goal at Dartmoor Gliding Society's Brentor airfield, south of Launceston, on Wednesday, January 7.
The K-13 glider he flew is one of two used by the club for training purposes and trial lessons for visitors.
As well as continuing to hone his skills as a fully-fledged glider pilot, he is now learning to operate the society's huge winch, which is capable of launching gliders to as high as 1,500 feet in about 30 seconds.
CONGRATULATIONS
Phil is pictured here being congratulated by his instructor, Bob Pirie, of Morwenstow, North Cornwall, following his solo flight.
Dartmoor Gliding Society has 70 flying members and a fleet of five gliders. It operates year-round at weekends and on Wednesdays, and members of the public are welcome to purchase vouchers for trial lessons, which include three months' free membership.
