Due to the concerns expressed by both Altarnun Parish Council and parishioners last autumn, Cornwall Councillor Phil Parsons arranged an open joint parish meeting, including Altarnun, Lewannick, North Hill and South Petherwin parish councils.
Both the Highway Agency officer and Cornwall Council highway officer attended the meeting. All four parish councils raised their concerns about the safety of the Plusha junction.
Those attending the meeting wished their local county councillor to press the relevant agency on the following points:
● Why had the suggested underpass been dropped a number of years ago?
● What could be done to slow traffic approaching the junction?
● Did the officers realise how 'confused' this junction is? Often drivers are not sure who has
priority
● Could the slip roads be lengthened?
As a follow up to these issues and in response to the two fatalities one at Plusha and the other Two Bridges, another meeting convened by Cllr Parsons late this spring.
Highways Agency officers, Cornwall Council highway officers and Altarnun, Lewannick and South Petherwin parish councillors were all in attendance.
The highway officers were willing to address the issues raised. Indeed many years back there had been in agreement a proposed underpass. However, funding was not secured as larger projects away from Cornwall were considered preferable.
The officers were willing to take on board the serious concerns expressed by all the councillors and county councillor attending. They welcomed the opportunity to meet and constructively go through the concerns and try and look at solutions.
It was agreed that the group of local councils and Cornwall Councillor would act as an action group to meet up with the Highway Agency and work with them in finding solutions.
Speed was one of the main issues discussed and suggestions put forward emphasised the use of speed cameras. The Highway Agency preferred the use of the Speed Camera Partnership along with signs and possible chevron type markings.
Local action group met up to view Plusha Junction prior to Graham Hicks, cabinet member for highways and transport visit on June 24 at the BP Service Station.
