MORE than 100 people arrived at the Rough Tor car park on Sunday for a fundraising event as part of Camelford’s Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal programme.

The group made up of local residents and with others travelling from outside the county to participate saw a procession made up of veterans, Scouts, Girl Guides Air Cadets and Brownies escorted by parents and all carrying their standards.

The walkers gathered at the top of the Tor to the 43rd Wessex Memorial where following a short service two minutes’ silence was observed while the Last Post was played on a World War One Bugle and a wreath of poppies was laid on the memorial plaque.

Camelford’s RBL chairman and Poppy Appeal organiser Julian Harman said the event was a ‘huge success’. It had started last year with just eight people but the idea appeared to have attracted the local community and it was decided to do it this year as a fundraiser for the Poppy Appeal.

Not since 1954 when the memorial was first dedicated has such a large group gathered there and it is now hoped that it will become an annual event and already planning for next year is underway.

Mr Harman said: “A big thank you to Eagle Plant, Jon Smeeth, Lisa Hannah and Tom Hilder for their services and time all given freely and also to Legion members who without their help the event would not be possible.”
