Camelford should act now on its traffic problems rather than wait ten or more years for a bypass, a meeting heard on Friday. One-hundred-and-fifty people packed the meeting at the district council offices to share their suggestions on traffic improvement with MP for North Cornwall, Paul Tyler. Mr Tyler, who called the meeting, explained that the earliest date for the completion of any bypass would be 2010 or even later.
Traders’ views are being sought on a proposal to establish a quality street market in Bude. The initiative aims make use of the “under utilised: Belle Vue Lane and attract people into the town who will then spend money in other shops.
Questionnaires have been compiled to gather views on the prospect of a CCTV system in Bude. North Cornwall District Council is leading the ambitious project to provide cameras in five or six towns, linked up to a central monitoring station.
A pub landlord’s appeal against the refusal of planners to let him turn it into a home, has been dismissed because it would be “an unjustified loss of a community facility”. A second appeal by Mr Keith Phipps, of the Bickford Arms, Brandis Corner, to convert the ground floor to a general store and off licence and use of kitchen/toilets and car park, was upheld.

The headmaster Mr Roger Peel and children of Lifton Primary School gather to say farewell to the school cook Mrs Elsie Mounce, who has retired after a long period of service.
After an excellent dinner at the Bullers Arms, Marhamchurch, celebrating the 10th anniversary of Bude Grasslands Society, awards were made to the winners of the tenth silage competition.
Miners strike at Cornish hip ops — Gerry Neale MP told Conservatives at St Clether that the government should not encourage the coal board to give in to Arthur Scargill’s continuing “unrealistic” demands. “There is no sense or good reason why we should go on pouring taxpayers money down uneconomic pits,” he said.
St Giles Youth Club table tennis teams played two matches last week. On Monday they played against Halwill Youth Club team when they drew three-all. The team members were: Paul Ilsley, Paul Sargent, Crystal Allin and David Williamson.

Miss Joyce Jones, of Launceston, has retired after 40 years’ service with the Girl Guides, many of which were spent as District Commissioner and captain of the Launceston Company.
Mr Reg Wonnacott, the last Bude employee who was with SWEB before nationalism, received a retirement gift from Mr R Symons, area manager.
Founder members Mrs Short and Mrs Seldon cut the cake at Bradworthy Women’s Institute golden jubilee party, which was presided over by Mrs Louis Elliott, President.
Delabole Parish Council (chairman Mr Brian Satchell) has decided to continue its crusade on behalf of the children who have to pay for their bus rides to school at Camelford.
Paul Walter, aged 15 of Bude, was ‘on air’ as he took part in the radio One Quiz Kids ‘75, finishing second in a South West heat. The questionmaster was DJ Alan Freeman.

Lezant Women’s Institute members celebrated their 40th birthday on Thursday week, the date coinciding with that of their first meeting in 1925, by inviting husbands and friends to a dinner and entertainment at the Eagle House Hotel. President Mrs J N Stephens welcomed the guests, who included Mrs Liddicoat and also Mrs Northey. The birthday cake was made by Mrs J Medland and was cut by two senior members, Mrs G Saunders and Mrs P Trewin.
A general rise in the rents of council houses in the borough was announced at Monday’s meeting of Launceston Town Council. The increases ranged from 2s 9d to 6s 11d. Also approved was a general increase of 1s 6d a week on all motor-car and motor-cycle garages. This brings the weekly rent of a car garage up to 9s 6d at Trecarrell Close and at Hurdon Way.

The honour of the freedom of the borough of Launceston was bestowed on Mr Stuart Luttrell Peter during a ceremony at the Town Hall, presided over by the mayor, Mr Reg Allen.
It is possible that Week St Mary may have a fully licensed house. An application is to be made at Stratton Court next week for a full publican’s licence for The Beeches to be known as The Green Inn.
This week Launceston has been celebrating the 400th anniversary of its great Philip and Mary Charter of 1555.
Wadebridge Rural Council was told on Monday by the clerk, Mr W E Blackwell, that of their nearly 600 tenants only five were in arrears with their rent to any extent.
The NUAW has been urged to continue its campaign for a decent standard of living for rural workers based on a minimum wage of £7 a week.

Chief Officer Fred Cornish, MN, whose home is at 4, Blanchminster Road, Bude, received the MBE at a Buckingham Palace investiture.
Mr Charles H Gillbard, of The Ranch, Launceston, who died on Tuesday, was a great benefactor to the town. He gave £5,000 for the provision of properties and tenement flats, the site and £500 for the building of the new hospital, and £11,000 for the provision of park. He also made many other lesser gifts the gowns worn by the borough aldermen, halfcrowns to all schoolchildren at Christmas, 10s to old-age pensioners, widows and unemployed.
In recognition of his services to Petherwin Gate Methodist Church and Sunday School Mr T D Vosper has been presented with a travelling rug.
The Admiralty is seeking to purchase 12 square miles of Bodmin Moor (in the De Lank area) for use after the war as a bombing range.

A legacy of £1,000 by Mr F Gist, a Kilkhampton “exile” who died in America, is to be used to provide a piped water supply for his native village.
Considerable damage was done by a thunderstorm at Week St Mary yesterday (Thursday), when lightning struck the tower of the parish church, causing a pinnacle to crash through the roof.
The Ashbury Estate came under the auctioneer’s hammer at Okehampton on Saturday, when several farms amounting to 2,000 acres were sold.

Complaint was made by police Superintendent Drew at Callington Brewster Sessions on the state of affairs at Gunnislake during the summer months. He said certain licensees were encouraging charabanc parties to come from Plymouth nearly every evening and stay until closing time. They usually brought an instrument, which one of the party played, while the others danced and shouted, some rattling bones together to the time of the music — “If one can call it such”. He thought it was die to the superfluous number of licensed houses in that areas ad the magistrates issued a warning that unless things improved the licensees would be reviewed.
Cornwall is to meet Devon in a county football match at Launceston tomorrow. Local players in the Cornwall side are: R Maddever and A W Blythe (Launceston) and J Fry (Tintagel).
