Take one GCSE student, add constant stressful revision, a pinch of nerves, combine with the attention of becoming a television celebrity and bring to the boil. Allow one week to cool, and the result is 16-year-old Harriet Trewin from Poughill who finished her last exam on Friday, and probably her last press interview in relation to her outstanding success in BBC television’s Junior Masterchef.

A night that Year 11 students from Callington Community College will remember is Friday, June 25, the night of their summer ball.

Planners are to meet on site at the Tree Inn Car Park, Stratton, to help decide whether to renew planning go ahead for three dwellings to be built there.

Children from Tintagel Primary School played the leading role when Tintagel’s £240,000 visitor centre was opened officially on Friday.

Holsworthy Division of the St John Ambulance Brigade gathered at the Manor car park on Friday evening when the recently-acquired ambulance was dedicated by Fr M Reynolds. Mr S McEvansoneya, area superintendent, accepted the ambulance from divisional superintendent Mr W R Roake.

At Launceston Football Club’s summer fete, the winners of the baby competition (all Launceston children) were Christopher Clements, Nicholas Houghton, Lee Hudson and Claire Barriball.

Pupils of St Joseph’s Junior School, Launceston, who recently passed Royal School of Music exams are: Ruth Riley (Grade I violin), Elizabeth Keane, Katy Willett, Pippa Henshall (Grade I piano) and Hayley Gearon (Grade I piano).

Gerry Neale, a 32-year-old solicitor, of Milton Keynes, was unanimously selected as the new Conservative candidate for North Cornwall.

Annett Heard, Antony Heard and Geoffrey Gliddon were the trophy winners at a mini-music festival at Central Methodist Church, Bude.

Mr M Collings was elected chairman at the first committee meeting of the Young Foresters 1st Camelford Troop.

Mr A J Tozer has been co-opted to Lifton Parish Council to fill the casual vacancy caused by the death of Mr A E Dennis.

Mr G Cock stated his wish to resign as chairman at a meeting of Milton Damerell FC and Mr S Adams was elected to fill his place. Mr W Eastcott is to be invited to become president.

July 4, 1964

Sunday was “Catholic Day” in Launceston, when between two and three thousand Roman Catholics from all parts of Devon and Cornwall gathered in the town to pay tribute to the Blessed Cuthbert Mayne, the priest who was executed in the town in the troubled days of 1577.

It is hoped that the fencing of the A30 trunk road across Bodmin Moor is completed before the winter.

The culmination of 16 years’ work by rugby enthusiast in Launceston came on Friday when, at the annual meeting of the County Union, the local club was formally affiliated as senior side.

June Bray, the little Boyton girl who startled music critics and teachers recently by obtaining 91 marks and a bronze medal in the initial divisional pianoforte playing examination of Trinity College of Music, can be heard on the air Friday evening in a feature in “The Week in the West.”

The rabbit disease, myxomatosis, is still spreading. Mr G Atkinson, the Ministry of Agriculture’s Superintendent Veterinary Officer for the South West, said acres where the disease had been reported were Lerryn, Lanreath, Liskeard, Tideford, St Kew, Davidstow, St Columb and Mawnan Smith.

Wounded in action: Cecil Rapson, of Hillside Farm, St Stephens; Pte E Ball, of 12, Highstreet, Launceston; Major A H Dunn, of Launceston. Reported missing: Harold Pooley, of Southdown, North Tamerton. Died of wounds: Pte Leonard Burden, of Fonson, Warbstow; Lt J B E Kittow, of Browda, Linkinhorne; Sapper W J Martin, DCM, formerly of Town Farm, Lydford.

Cornwall Education Committee is supporting the establishment of harvest camps to be filled by schoolboys and girls to help get the crops in. The children will be paid the full legal wage of 9d per hour.

The Ministry of Food is now issuing dehydrated potato in powder form, though the majority is going to the Forces.

Mr Clarence Reginald Jackett, 28, of Trecombe, Stoke Climsland, died after being crushed under a tractor at Lynher Farm, North Hill, on Monday.

After a total deficiency of £313 in the 1931 season, Bude Football Club has a credit balance of £3. Launceston Club made a profit of £30 on last season.

The Launceston Diamond Jubilee swimming bath in Underlane, built in 1897 for £670, has just been re-opened after repairs costing £320.

The Ford V-8 luxury motor car has been reduced in price to £165.

The Launceston Grass Track Clubheld their opening meeting at Pennygillam on Tuesday with some exciting motor-cycle racing. The secretary is Mr Maurice F Hicks.

Bostcastle Parish Council is protesting that the RDC has alloczted them only two council houses when neighbouring places had been given eight.

July 5, 1924

instruction from the Rector (Rev A R O Apps), Messrs W H Jasper and Son sold at auction at Camelford on Friday the greater part of Lanteglos by Camelford Glebe. The 130 acres fetched £4,328.

A big sale lasting four days in being conducted by Messrs J Kittow and Son who are disposing of the contents of Trebursye House, Launceston, the property of the late Miss A M Gurney. Messrs Vosper and Kivell have dold Maders Farm, South Hill, comprising 55 acres for £3,000 and Manaton Mill, nearby for £1,300.

For seven years Paster of Okehampton and Sourton Baptisit Churches, Rev C J Leal is leaving for Bath.
