Callington Community College is to become one of the 22 new sports colleges from September 2000.
A landscape enhancing millennium project which will last for hundreds of years is underway at Launceston. Businesses, organisations and individuals are being encouraged to become involved in the scheme to plant an avenue of trees on the Scarne Link Road.
Irresponsible dog owners are “endangering the health” of pupils at Holsworthy Community College. Principal of the college, Tony Gray, is furious that people allow their dogs to foul on the college’s playing fields where the pupils play sport every day.
Camelford Town Council says it is not spending tax payers’ money on a millennium tea set for the town being produced by a private company. Confusion arose when residents received leaflets encouraging them to “celebrate the millennium with porcelain for Camelford”.

The annual meeting of Holsworthy and Stratton Show Association was held at the Crown and Sceptre Hotel, Holsworthy, with Mr H Cox in the chair.
Hopes for relieving the demand for squash at Launceston Leisure Centre have received a setback. The Sports Council has turned down a request from North Cornwall Council for a grant to help pay for an extra cost.
Launceston has been stripped of industrial grants through the cuts in regional aid announced by the Government on Wednesday, North Cornwall Council’s industrial officer described the cut as a death blow. But local MP Gerry Neale said it would not be catastrophic.
Werrington has been predicted as an area of future growth by the chairman of North Cornwall District Council. Mr Graham Facks-Martin told the housing committee on Monday that it should press ahead with negotiations to buy land at Landycross for building six council houses.

Mrs Kathleen Agnes Keast, of Dunheved Road, Launceston received the MBE at an investiture at Buckingham Palace this week. The award is in recognition of her services to the town.
Martin Durham, aged 23, of Whitstone miraculously escaped alive when a Birmingham public house was blown up by a terrorist bomb on Monday. Martin, who is a student at Aston Polytechnic College, suffered injuries to the side of his body and is expected to stay in hospital for several weeks.
The world champion knitter, Mrs Valerie Hartrey, of Valley Road, Bude, is through to the finals to be held in Plymouth next year.
Mr John Yeo, for 25 years secretary of Holsworthy branch of the Farmers’ Union, was presented with a wrist-watch on behalf of the branch by Mr George Squance.
Mrs W M Mounce, branch chairman, received the trophy when Launceston won the County Challenge Cup at the annual conference of the Women’s Section of the Royal British Legion at Truro.

Pressure continues at Holsworthy for the establishment of a secondary school there. Following the announcement that Devon county council have decided to postpone the provision of a comprehensive school at Okehampton, Holsworthy rural council have agreed that a joint protest with the primary school parent-teacher association against the proposal should go forward to the Under Secretary of State for Education.
Meeting on Wednesday, the East Cornwall Water Board was told of a communication from the Ministry of Housing and Local Government concerning the Board’s proposed impounding reservoir at Sibleyback in the parish of St Cleer.
Messrs J Kittow and Son sold by auction at Launceston the freehold terraced dwelling house 6 Druckham Terrace, Race Hill, Launceston. Biddings commenced at £1,000 and were carried to £1,120 at which price the property was sold to Mrs H Pearn, of Boscastle.

Rev Samuel John Pethick was on Saturday instituted Vicar of the united benefice of Laneast with St Clether.
Hard on the heels of Friday’s flood and rain damage came a gale on Monday night which brought further damage throughout a large area. What must have been a whirlwind tore away half a timber store at Kelly Bray. Mr John Cole, of Marsh Farm, Calstock, out of his depth in one of his meadows, clung to the tails of his two bullocks and got them to tow him to the farmhouse where water reached the bedroom window.

Prisoner of war: Pte T J Debnam, of Middlewood, North Hill.
There has been very heavy rain this week, and Mr S Martin, postman from Launceston, was held up by floods at Billacott and Caudworthy, North Petherwin, on Tuesday — so he completed his round riding a horse borrowed from Mr Arthur Gubbin, of Maxworthy.
Camelford Farmers’ Union have taken exception to a remark made at the last meeting of Camelford Rural Council to the effect that reducing the rent of the new houses for agricultural workers by increasing the rents of other council houses constituted a subsidy to agriculture. At the NFU meeting several members protested at the comment, and Mr R G Paynter said that these and other subsidies were not for the farmers, but for the consumers; farmers would prefer to have an economic price for their produce.
The Castle at Bude has been purchased by the Urban Councul for use as municipal offices, with the grounds as public gardens. It was offered to them by the owners, Sir Douglas and Lady Nicholson, at a price much below the market value.

The national grid system of electricity supply will come into operation for Devon and Cornwall next month. Conversion of standard frequencies is now proceeding and a tariff being worked out.
To celebrate the Royal wedding of Prince George, Duke of Kent, and Princes Marina, of Greece, the children of Bude were given a free tea in the Headland Pavilion on Thursday week.
The chairman of Stratton branch of the National Tithepayers’ Association told a meeting on Friday: “Tithe should be wiped out inside of 20 years. We are not asking for charity but for justice.”

The North Cornwall Labour Party, meeting at Wadebridge, Saturday, decided to put forward a candidate at the next election – the first Labour candidate for North Cornwall.
Those interested in wireless have formed a radio society at Holsworthy.
Mrs S Lock, of Trethevy, South Petherwin, who has been unable to walk for 10 years and who was carried from car to platform, was able to walk up and down after attending Pastor Jefferies’ faith healing mission at Plymouth on Tuesday.
Leslie Daw, 18, of Lower Medrose, was killed instantly when caught in belting at Delabole Slate Quarries.
